http://www.starwars.com/news/j-j-abrams-to-write-and-direct-star-wars-episode-ix

Script written by Abrams and Chris Terrio (Argo, Batman V Superman, Justice League).

No release date announced. I expect the change of writers and directors will probably make it miss May 2019.

Well, they wanted to fire him before that film even opened.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/colin-trevorrow-as-director-star-wars-episode-ix-1035463

Quote:
Rumors of Trevorrow's departure have dogged the project since early June, weeks before the opening of The Book of Henry, his thriller that was panned by critics and failed at the box office.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that script issues have continued to be a sore spot throughout Episode IX's development, with Trevorrow having repeated stabs at multiple drafts. In August, Jack Thorne, the British scribe who wrote the upcoming Julia Roberts-Jacob Tremblay movie Wonder, was tapped to work on the script.

Sources say that the working relationship between Trevorrow and Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy became unmanageable. Kennedy, who had already been through one director firing/replacement on the Han Solo spinoff movie, was not eager for a sequel and tried to avoid this decision.

An executive who has worked with him on past films (not Star Wars) said he is really difficult to work with and he is not surprised he was let go: http://www.vulture.com/2017/09/star-wars-episode-8-colin-trevorrow-firing-explanation.html

Quote:
But to hear speculation from a ranking Hollywood movie insider with direct knowledge of the productions on both The Book of Henry and Jurassic World (and who requested anonymity out of concern for sensitive ongoing business relationships), Trevorrow’s firing may have come more directly as a consequence of being “difficult.”

“During the making of Jurassic World, he focused a great deal of his creative energies on asserting his opinion,” the executive explains. “But because he had been personally hired by Spielberg, nobody could say, ‘You’re fired.’ Once that film went through the roof and he chose to do Henry, [Trevorrow] was unbearable. He had an egotistical point of view— and he was always asserting that.”

...

“When the reviews for Book of Henry came out, there was immediately conjecture that Kathy was going to dump him because they weren’t thrilled with working with him anyway,” the executive continues. “He’s a difficult guy. He’s really, really, really confident. Let’s call it that.”

Very true, but it also seems like that other people have been wanting to fire Trevorrow from his past projects too Laughing

Speak for yourself, I for one want to see the First Order build a Death Galaxy in a month only for it to get blown up by a single blaster shot through an exhaust black hole.

Fisher will be back via unused footage from ep7.

As they announced previously, no CGI will be used, so expect just a brief appearance.

Hamill also returns, and Billy Dee Williams reprises his role from the originals as Lando.

John Williams composed the score as usual.

I can only hope that he didn't truly die at the end of episode VIII, using some 'creative writing' (ie "it was all a dream") Laughing

Nah. Regardless of whether TLJ did the character justice or not, in the final film it's definitely time for Luke to be a force ghost mentor.

It'll take special effort for IX to be as bad as VIII. I'll be surprised if the plans for the new trilogy headed by Rian Derpson actually come to pass. Laughing

For Leia, they will also use unused footage from Ep8, not just Ep7 as they said before. https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/2018/08/star-wars-episode-ix-exclusive-todd-fisher-reveals-j-j-abrams-will-also-incorporate-unused-footage-of-carrie-fisher-from-the-last-jedi-to-bring-back-leia.html

Even in death you can't get away from the mouse. It's like working for Wolfram & Hart.

Nope, they had to get permission from her family to do that. So, presumably returning posthumously for one final time would be what Fisher would want - or, in any case, it's the closest we can get to her will bar her returning as a force ghost to let us know about it.

They should just stop making Star Wars movies altogether for a while, sack Kathleen Kennedy (or euthanize her), find some producers that CARE about the Star Wars legacy and just start over.

Kathleen is safe.
This star wars will make bank.
And her position will be secure.
Then she'll do other shit spin offs and be on the chopping block and another star wars movie will save her.
