Back in June, ubiquitous chat company Discord launched a games tab that bore a slight resemblance to Steam’s front page. Now it’s launching its own store that resolutely refutes Steam’s anything-goes approach.
“We’ll be launching a curated game store experience similar to one of those cozy neighborhood book shops with recommendations about the hottest and newest games from us to you,” the company said in an announcement, noting that “big” publishers like THQ and Deep Silver are already on board—though if we’re being real, THQ and Deep Silver are far from the biggest. In addition, signing up for Discord’s “Nitro” subscription program will now net you a handful of curated “golden” games alongside benefits that were previously included.
There will also be indie games on the Discord store, and the company says it will open up a new “First On Discord” program in which it funds indie developers in exchange for temporary exclusivity. The exclusivity window will “usually” last 90 days, Discord says.
Lastly, you’ll be able to use Discord to launch any of your games, even if you didn’t buy them on the rapidly expanding communications megalith. The new “Universal Library” feature will scan your machine for games and then handle booting all requisite launchers.
Interestingly, Discord chief marketing officer Eros Resmini told Variety that the company is doing this in part because it “didn’t want to sell ads or user data,” and in this age of platforms like Facebook farming vast fields of personal info to aid our advertising overlords, that’s at least refreshing to hear.
Discord says, however, that chat will remain its “primary” focus, with a current emphasis on performance and new features like priority speaker.
As part of launching our boutique store experience, we’re bringing some new games to life for the first time ever. These fancy fresh First on Discord games will be available first on Discord (get it) for PC.
Anyway, we’re super excited about these games but best to let the trailers speak for themselves. Scoot your chair up real nice and check out the games below to see what’s coming First on Discord store later this fall.
"What, Steam is copying us? We'll copy THEM! That will teach Valve!"
But seriously. STOP. FRACTURING. THE. DIGITAL. MARKET. Every cat and aunt has their own download service now and it's become a joke. I already had THREE such early services die on me, taking all my bought and paid for games with them (Direct2Drive, Impulse and the old Microsoft GFWL store). Unless you give DRM-free games you can download as installers, please fuck off.
Another one
I honestly don't see a reason for them to open up a store. And if they don't provide DRM free games I wouldn't gamble on it with my money... seen enough platforms go down because they didn't offer anything different.
Trust my library to a startup pronounced Pisscorp that's going to sell out as soon as the guy behind it smells enough money (he founded Discord by money gained through selling off his previous startup)? Yea, they can fuck right off.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

I don't really mind this. I likely will not use it. I just hate how many publishers are doing this. (IE needing uplay on steam)
I also really dislike publishers locking titles to their platform. I hope someone makes a good community driven library and stats software that can be used to launch titles on all platforms/storefronts. Perhaps subsidized by also being a store. (Similar to earlier days of gamespy.)

Nintendo Switch SX OS Pro / PS4 Pro 5.05 Hen/Mira / PS3 Modded / Wii Modded / 360 Pre-Wave4 mod
Yay ! Yet another PC game store was definitely needed ...
And I am sure they will put an unskippable advertisement every time you launch a game in the near future.
You know like Twitch plan to do it for prime users for streams ...

Stores are ok as long as K can buy keys. Platforms are the worst except sweet gog and steam

This has been described as a curated store, which is something we don't see today. Also, discord is a free service that's quite good and very popular. They make money through subscriptions which I presume aren't very tempting to most users. If this store helps them make more money to continue supporting and improving their services, why not? Or maybe you want discord to end up in the hands of Facebook, Microsoft or some similar company?
Say what you want, but Discord is the best voip program there is now for gaming. And it did a lot things on a superb level, from design, voice quality, chat functionality, creating your own servers, creating communities, finding people to play with (especially some niche games like Quake, Hunt, etc.).
It's pretty fucking awesome for now so if that helps them to continue doing the awesome work, I'm completely ok with that. (as long as they don't fuck it up and become another facebook shit).

That's what happened to Direct2Drive and Impulse - all sold off to major retailers.
