Dear dudettes and dudes,

we have some metallic filters with an aluminium frame for a cooker hood (dunstabzugshaube in german) in which we lovingly cultivated grease (? fett in german) for quite some time, but we decided to get rid of it.

Now I would like to utilize natron (not soda), for one because its cheap, and have tested it. I first took 50g of it, submerged it in water, and applied the wet sandy stuff to the surface and slightly through the slits and let it rest for at least 12 hours. Then I washed it off at high temperatures and again with lower temperatures but high pressure. That had some good result, as the filters original color was visible again and I had to clean the bath tube Laughing, but its not close to really clean. Plus, I only tested it on one of the filters.

Then I took 350g and applied that to both filters, this time perhaps taking less water, but essentially the whole depth of the filter was submerged in this weird mass. Due to time constraints I washed it off after only about 4-5 h and the results were dissappointing.
Maybe it was the amount of water, maybe it was the time.

Ultimately I would like to know how to apply this ideally optimally. I assume heat would also help to convince the dirty mass to bond to the natron so it can be washed off?

Any ideas or experience?
If not, let the mockery begin Laughing

If whatever you want to clean has a lot of pollutants of let's say organic nature, you best use a strong base.
Examples: sodium hydroxide, barium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide
If it is very greasy you can use ammonia. And if non applies you can also use some elbow grease.

I'm not sure how to obtain some of these.

I'm trying to get by with sodium bicarbonate (what I refer to as "natron"), but have easy access to sodium carbonate, which when solved in water apparently produces sodium hydroxide. Interestingly sodium bicarbonate when solved in boiling water produces sodium carbonate...

Anyway I read this stronger stuff would attack the aluminium frame. The filter is basically a multi layer grid of thin metal. This is why elbow grease (appreciate the pun btw) has been inneffective. None of the damn dirt is really accessible.
