Too bad it's only base game with NO expansions.
I played the first one to death. I know all maps by heart.
The Restoration of Erathia is pretty dry game by itself, it's a shame it doesn't include expansions but maybe one day since SoD brings a lot of needed changes to the game and plenty of new maps.
RoE doesn't even include Random Map Generator.
Still love the game, and if you don't build an Portal of Glory by 7th day on 200% difficulty you are a noob!

I have HoMM3 HD+ installed, but I've played the game so much through the years, that I simply can't get myself to launch it again. Besides that, playing it on high resolution actually takes something from graphics quality. It truly does not look as good as original on low res crt.
I'm still certain I'll get this one. If nothing else, I'll launch it and admire the graphics. It may be nostalgia talking, but for me, HoMM3 is pixel art perfection.
Oh, and explanation on why it's only RoE also crushes all hopes on anything else besides original:

We found tons of documentation and data but regarding Heroes III we had nothing but the usable source code of Heroes III Restoration of Erathia. |

So, there is no chance for expansions at all?
I guess I won't be buying this one after all.

I don't have a problem with H3 HD+ but I remember there were a lot of settings. Maybe something's wrong on your end? For me it's perfect graphical fidelity and I'm doing 16:10. The map screen just covers a whole bigger area and other windows like combat don't take the entire screen. Also I agree HoMM3 graphics are true art.
Also concerning the expansions that's just laziness on their part. AB and SoD really did not add that much but they were significant, I guess recreating it would take a bit of effort but not impossible by far. And no words on moddability I guess which is just another reason to stick with HoMM 3 community efforts that try continue the game.

Loved it back in the day, but fuck this game. Take too long to finish a map? Fuck you, enemy has 9999 of every army. That said, the music and story telling was great. Loved reading the intros to every mission. Same with Homm4 even though the combat sucked ballz.

VCMI doesn't contain any proprietary code or gamedata, they rewrote the engine from scratch.
Thats not illegal.

Heroes 4 is probably the best in the series.

But HoMM is still IP of Ubisoft so they probably could still shut it down, just like CDPR did with that Bloodlines remake. |
No thats different, the Bloodlines remake used proprietary assets.

could be fun replaying it with the ipad...
but then again... why just they don't make a good Homm VII instead of remaking history?

That's it. There is nothing wrong with HD+. In fact it's the best way to play the game on modern computers. But game was made for 800x600, and no matter what you do with it, you'll ether get far view, or haze at non-native lcd resolution. HD+ isn't bad at all, but it's not perfect ether. And, sadly, I'm purist at heart when it comes to 2D graphics.
Come to think about that, I'm starting believe that all the HD upgrading of games had a cause (at least a little one) in modern monitors being crap at displaying native resolutions of classics.
