Its become rather annoying really.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

The introduction of the term happened so strangely coordinated anyway.
I'm sure that some have picked up on that and it is being misappropriated on purpose.

When was the critical point?
Was it when CNN released that fabricated CIA dossier on Trump's russian activities and how the FSB could control him? Then they gave the chance to Trump to call them Fake News and it blew up, now all sides are using it.

The press now uses it as a joke word as a tactic to disarm it since they got a pretty bad rap among half the US population right now. Frankly, the press deserves a massive kick up its biased ass.

Tell us more about how stupid the whole population is and how they can't form their own opinion. And that they shouldn't whine about biased media pushing their agenda. You are a shining beacon of intelligence, a special snowflake, not like all the sheep!

Because those people would actually be able to form an opinion and not cry about every single media outlet "pushing their views" to them.
I'm not saying the media have been faultless ( they bear a very large responsibility in Trump's uprising ), but much of the flak they've received is just naive, gullible people finally coming to a realization - a realization they might have had if they informed themselves a little better. And now that they've been spoon-fed by some, they decide to follow them as blindly as they did with the terrible mainstream media before. How ironical. |
Eeeh you're actually turning facts around. It's not people who suddenly realize the press is unreliable and jumping on the bandwagon - it's that the press suddenly went overboard in how biased they are and incredibly obviously so. I mean, anyone with half a brain could see they've been biased for years but the DEGREE of lying and deceit has skyrocketed the past few years.
Do you know the saying, "when it rains, it pours"? When we get a customer complaint at work, it's usually followed by similar complaints and the reason for this, is that people start to take notice. If you spot one mistake because it's blatant, it's normal to go actively looking for others even if you would have missed them otherwise and that's exactly what is happening now - the media is under heavy scrutiny now, more so than ever so any mistake they make is spotted and shared thoroughly.
It should have happened years ago but it never went "mainstream" (how ironic) and mainly revolved around Youtube personalities bashing the media and how crap it is to a small audience.
Ah where are the days where the Daily Show poked fun of how biased Fox News was ... back when the Daily Show wasn't a pile of crap and back when the other news stations weren't quite being so deceitful and biased themselves.

@TheZor
What suddenly happened was that someone ran for president on an anti-immigration platform, stroking nationalist feelings by putting America first and giving no fucks about political correctness. This is what suddenly happened.
The media went ballistic because their echo chamber was shattered and overreacted by accusing Trump not only for the shit he said/did, but for extra imaginary bullshit, as if he was literally Hitler, as the saying goes.
The people saw someone saying what they *want* to hear and talking about sensitive issues that others avoid like the plague. But everyone in the media was going craaaaaazzyyy, raaaaging against them personally, not just Trump, but them personally for supporting him, the deplorables.
That's what suddenly happened. And I'm not a Trump supporter if you've followed my posting throughout the election period, but it's quite obvious who is whining. So take your moral high ground and stuff it. Suddenly.

But there is a difference between being biased (which people always knew about their local papers being more left or more right-leaning, this is absolutely nothing new), to being deceitful (fox news the past couple of years) to being outright liars (breitbart, infowars).
And there is also accountability, which went right out the window for the unchecked online-news sources like breitbart and infowars. When a journalist wrote outright shit at the New Yorker or The Times there was either a public apology and/or he was fired. Not so with infowars, Alex Jones has been spewing his filth since 9/11 when I first visited his site, and he only grew worse. And now apparently Trump reads and believes his shite and only sees him confirmed there.
Again, the media being biased is not the issue here, you always chose between a more conservative or a more liberal source. Now it has somehow become ok to just say 'whelp, the media are biased anyways, so I might as well read Breitbart and Russia Today and have all my backwards opinions confirmed by unchecked unaccountable editors hiding behind a professional front'.

All the mainstream media outlets were already biased up to a point, but Trump was too big of a troll for them to not break their cover, in the end.
They completely fell for it and played his game, effectively becoming more like him in their stances, which ultimately ended up with him sitting in office, and the mainstream media in lack of both integrity and trust.
I tend to see things in that logical order, but I can totally understand you see it the other way around - more likely, it's a mix of the two, but the end result is effectively the same.
I still stand by my opinion that people should get their heads out of their asses by themselves rather than blame it on the evil media or politicians like they currently are.
It would appear that it currently is the case with more and more people scrutinizing the media and politicians, involvement, finally !..
but when I see SJWs and the likes, alt-right "news", YouTube personalities blabbering for hours with the most market-y tone ( some of them are actually good, but I've yet to see something new you couldn't have found in a book/a proper news outlet ).. all I see is an embryo of what we already have, except it's being shaped by the Internet and social media. I'm not very enthusiastic about the outcome.
This general lack of a proper opinion personally drive me insane ( hence why I was so undiplomatic in my original post ), I know it's irrational, but it just depresses me.

Did I say the media were faultless ? Nah, I did the opposite. I agree with you on the echo-chamber thing.
Yes, people want the dirt ( something Trump clearly understood ) ? Let's put their faces deep in it, they love it, hence it must be right. Let's cater to every one of the human natural tendencies, that's the true paragon of political integrity !
If you felt aimed by my original post in the slightest, it's your problem man. I don't care whether you support Trump or not, it's barely relevant to the topic.

OK, you annoyed me by making the whole population out to be retarded with wrooong opinions, that's why I told you to stuff it. I take it back, if you stuffed it, take it out, it was a misunderstanding.
I don't understand what you meant about the dirt.

It's fine man, we have quite different opinions, we're bound to clash every now and then
By dirt, I mean our "worst instincts" of sorts, it's hard describing this in English without making a fool out of myself.
It's very easy to bring the worst out of people, but much harder the other way around.
If you give them a poor excuse to hate, they will hate; but if you give them an equally poor excuse to love/tolerate, they won't. I'm just trying to paraphrase what I was feeling, it probably looks like high-school levels of logic to a native speaker.
I know I sound incredibly far-up-my-ass saying that, but I think it's been proven ( up to a point, since it's not science ) by scholars before me, and it's easy for us to relate to that with personal experiences.
The same logic could be applied to the debates which saw Trump being investigated as the presidential candidate: if people see a funny bully who knows not to step over the line ( even though they can clearly see he's a bully, and that the line is being pushed again and again ), people will cater to him/her rather than the less funny, less seducing guy in front, no matter how knowledgeable or competent he could be in comparison with the bully.
