For those who are old enough. I want you to think back to BBS door games.
These were pretty much the pre-cursors to modern multiplayer games. One of my favorite was Land of Devastation. In this game you had to save the world. You wandered around the wasteland, in a real map. You could fight monsters, pick up gear, improve your character, trade and sell, craft some stuff, upgrade equipment, build forts, take over areas with automated weapons. You had to collect pieces of a machine that would save the world. There were all kinds of terrains, obstacles, areas, and you could even, as the sysop, edit the map to be whatever you wanted, easily add your own monsters, equipment, etc.
Now, we have facebook games which are the equivalent of door games and the best they can do is, click on this, come back in 8 minutes and click on it again. After you clicked that a few times, click this other one.
Would it really be so hard to make a quality game in this day and age? given that 30 years ago they could make that.

Because stupid gamers are easily willing to spend money, while "smart" gamers are nitpickers who are considering 40 euro investment as if they are bying a house.
Seriously now (but my sample is probably just small and wrong), I knew people who were into hardcore CRPGs (Torment, Baldur's Gate etc) and they wouldn't buy a single player game for the life of them, while local PES and FIFA players regularly shell out money for every new version.

This is an old argument but the kind of games bought by "casuals" tend to be games you can play for a long time:
CS:GO
Rocket League
Fortnight
FIFA
COD
GTA V
All have tons and tons of replay value and since many casuals only own a few games it's easier to spend that much (look on second hand sites for people selling their old consoles and the games sold with it are ALWAYS the typical FIFA/COD games).
Now for more serious gamers, if you want to play many games and keep things affordable, you know waiting for sales is the best way to go. I always bought my RPGs full price because I knew they usually had enough hours to make it worthwhile but I rarely paid full price for FPS because they tend to be completed in a few days.

This thread is nuts. Describing concepts that were present in games 30 years ago through rose-tinted glasses, while the same concepts are still present in pretty much any recent games, which you'd (a general you ofc) generally pan cause they're too generic. Fuck me, upgrade equipment, fight monsters and pick up gear. Such novel ideas! In no way done in today's games, at all.
Y'all old, and bitter, the equivalent of grandpas sayin "Back in my day, we knew how to have fun!" and screaming "Get off my lawn" to every modern game.
Hurr durr most gamers are dumb, but not me, i'm a fucking genius, look at me pan yet another game i don't even intend on playing cause i'm too old to like gaming anymore but like to talk shit cause it's the only thing that gives my life meaning!
Time to pack it up boys, find a new hobby if this one doesn't do it for you anymore. Just stop polluting the internet with bullshit sob stories about how things were better before and how much they suck now. We're living the freaking golden age of gaming, and y'all lucky enough to be a part of it, you have computers and access to today's games but can't find any merit to the people giving you the opportunity.

Oh do fuck off. I'm a huge retro gamer and I can tell you that modern games have a serious issue with innovation and variety because they all tend to parrot the same elements over and over and yet somehow dumb it all down at the same time.
Many old games had their flaws but the rough edges added to the character. The polished regurgitated crap we get today most of the time is so soulless in comparison because games have become manufactured products instead of games designed by passionate people who were trying to make something different and new. Ask anyone working in the industry and they'll confirm this. Indie games are one solution but they largely lack the money for big budget games and feel "cheap" as a result.

Well let's give them what they want.
It's because devs now are too focused on their poly amorous relationships ships and their other kin twitter profiles and making sure every 8 year old is raised without gender bias and that 3 year olds start taking hormone suppressants so theyll become tranny game devs.

Facebook.
Quality Games.
ehm, I don't think you're looking at the best place for your "quality games".
There's been a tremendous evolution in recent years of the indie game developer with many quality games done by enthusiasts..

We eventually set up our own server on elementary school and played it for free

Played so much LORD. Also, Cybersphere was amazing.

BBS? That is a name I haven't heard in a long time. When I was young, it was a Commodore 64 with a second joystick for my buddy to coop with. Even back then I felt there were some games with lazy programming.

i don't think it has changed much, there were hundreds of fairly shitty BBS games.
it's just that devs today just have much easier access for shitting out garbage and it's well accepted now that games don't have to feature any depth to make you a millionaire.
adding depth to game mechanics takes a substantial amount of time if you have anything resembling graphics/sounds, so it's hard to make a direct comparison to ascii games.
i still stand on the side that game devs / publishers are seriously fucking lazy at times but i couldn't say if it has changed..
