This game.

The controls, the fucking camera angles and that wolf.

But what a great experience it was once finished.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Sadly i only played the demo back then.
And also never really got far. IIRC i kept dieing pretty much in the beginning every time to some traps or monsters? Very Happy

But i could have mistaken that for Deathtrap Dungeon too.

Quirky game, weird 8-degree controls like say Die By the Sword though here it's movement and not just combat and of course the humor and themes that would probably not be very appreciated today from full on male and female nudity to torture and religious themes.

Sequel improved the visuals a bit although it's more open so it's possible to miss large parts of the game depending on how you explore and it's more combat driven.

Also used Ellipsoid instead of Polygonal graphics for a rounded visual style which works great for the environment although the characters look like balloons or some such. Very Happy

Multiple endings too and a variety of weapons, even armor though it's a bit heavy and you'll probably get killed trying to use it.

(That's Ecstatica 2 which uses a few more of those ellipsoids, still kinda balloon like.)

More like a wolf breeding with a Xenomorph. Very Happy

Lord, I never got far in this game. I kept getting killed by the wolf and eventually gave up trying. Ecstatica 2 was loads of fun and looked great at the time as well - combat was a lot more involved as well.

Yeah early on in the first game a werewolf will basically hunt for you through the village section and the default weapon (Well the sword once you actually find it.) aren't that great plus I don't know if he'll stay down permanently.

Getting caught means getting beaten to critical health and tied up and beaten some more back and forth plus you also have to avoid some other creatures especially if you're in a low health state.

Then there's traps, NPC who might not be all that nice and the big evil itself.

And a number of different ways through it all so pretty non-linear meaning it's easy to miss many of the non-critical parts of the game entirely, which I think goes even further in the sequel though it ups the action by a ton which wasn't the most popular decision.
(Controls were hopefully improved a bit though, think it used the numpad keys by something by default at least for the first game.)

Ecstatica 2 definitely had better controls - the first leaned more towards Alone in the Dark in responsiveness I recall i.e. a slight delay and your character behaving a little sluggish as if he was drunk.

And yeah, they had a pretty bad start of the game - I can't imagine the first game sold all that much because anyone who would try it, would immediately die over and over and that's a dumb thing to do in any game. I'm sure it's a great game once you put in the effort but I guess I've never had the patience to persevere.

Ecstatica 2 was a lot more open and while tough, combat actually felt fair.
