Quote:
Warner Bros. Pictures is reportedly in the early stages of developing a relaunch of the iconic “The Matrix” franchise. Zak Penn is in talks to write a treatment for the new version and there’s reportedly potential interest in “Creed” actor Michael B. Jordan to star.

However, things remain in extremely early stages at this point. Also the Wachowski siblings, who wrote and directed the original and its two sequels, are not involved at this point. How involved they actually will be has not been determined.

Joel Silver is said to have approached Warners about the idea of mining the Matrix for a potential new film, but Silver sold his interest in all his movies to the studio in 2012 and are said to be leery of including him in any meaningful role.

The first film became the highest grossing R-rated film of 1999 in North America, and the fourth-highest grossing film of the year worldwide along with winning four Oscars.

The original’s star Keanu Reeves has previously said he would be open to returning for another installment of the franchise if the Wachowskis were involved.

No reason more can't be done with the franchise other than a reboot. Could easily set it in a previous cycle with a darker ending (obviously), or even do the original machine war.

Well, prequels are generally not very interesting because we know what happens in the future and how the conflict is ultimately settled.

More importantly, with the Wachowskis not on board (in 2015 they said the idea of making a Matrix reboosequel was particularly repelling, and were very disappointed in Hollywood's practices), Warner will also likely have to "respect their wishes" and make a clean break.

The Matrix was special because of its timing and technical innovation.

There's no way to revive it and make it work beyond yet another so-so action fest.

well i just cant agree with that, because most stories are resolved with 'the good guy wins, bad guy is defeated'.. endings are usually the most predictable thing in films these days, so arguing we know how it ends i dont think is that big a deal... if they tell us an enjoyable story, not only could it be enjoyable but really contribute something to the overall story universe.

alternatively could always set a matrix story a hundred or so years in the future with factions within the humans, or machines, or both, wanting to break the truce and having humans and machines join together to fight to preserve it? whether you do a prequel or a sequel theres so much you could do with the franchise.

Regardless of how hard the wachkowakhsdsksiki's tried to slam the franchise into the ground with the third film, they did at least create a really cool universe rich with stories to tell.

i dont think wb will respect their wishes. if theres money to be made in more matrix films (and there IS!), i dont see why they wouldnt do it. WB has no special reverence for the wwachoakhowdkskis... they took a gamble on them with speed racer and it failed.. took a gamble on them with jupiter ascending and it failed... whatever good will and respect they built with the first film, its certainly well and truly over and done with.

OK, the original article has some additional tidbits: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/matrix-reboot-works-at-warner-bros-986292

- The studio would like to get at minimum the blessing of the Wachowskis (for the fans). Good luck with that!
- Joel Silver approached WB to make a new movie, but he has sold his interest to all his movies in 2012 and he has a strained relationship with the Wachowskis (we didn't know that). Between the two (or well, three), WB cares more about getting somehow the Wachowskis on board rather than Silver.
- WB explored the idea of making a TV series in recent months but decided against it.
- Keanu Reeves very recently said if there was ever interest in him returning to the role he would do it only with the Wachowskis writing and directing, therefore it's likely the studio will just look elsewhere (because the Wachowskis ain't returning, definitely not in that capacity anyway).
- Some inside WB see it as a "sacrosanct property", others are like reboot that shit for the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$!
- WB are inspired by the Star Wars anthology films and want to make various Matrix movies (example the authors of the article give rather than probably one they heard of: young Morpheus movie).

Really? Somehow I doubt it, because he's always bullshitting about how great his movies are, but the man has a big mouth so who knows.

I know that the Wachowskis now that they are free from him debunked what was consider a "fact" about Bound since the Matrix was released: https://www.buzzfeed.com/adambvary/the-wachowskis-jupiter-ascending-the-matrix-cloud-atlas

Quote:
The popular mythology is that Bound was an audition piece for the Wachowskis to secure the job of directing The Matrix — an idea that caused both Andy and Lana to roll their eyes. “Joel made that up,” Lana said with a sigh.

Instead, after metaphorically washing their hands of Assassins, the Wachowskis said they decided simply to focus on making their own directorial debut.

I think they had an agreement "as long as you let us skip interviews, you can go and tell whatever bullshit you want and we won't stop you", which lead at one point to Silver telling the press Alan Moore was very excited about V for Vendetta, which made Moore demand a public apology as he never said that, which Silver refused to do, excusing himself - wait for it- by saying that he had lunch 20 years ago with Moore and he thought Moore was excited, so he thought "I'm pretty sure he is still excited 20 years later!", which prompted Moore to demand to get his name completely removed. Clusterfuck Laughing

it was in an interview and someone said they saw speed racer and he basically apologized for it in a very dismissive 'it sucked' kinda way... i remember it coming as a bit of a surprise to me since, as you said, yes usually well known for hyping things up about how amazing his films are... which is exactly what made me think at the time that their partnership was pretty much through and bridges burned.

I really wouldn't mind stories in the matrix.

A cop chasing this retard down the street only to be forced to wake up for the second time. Dealing with the reality of living in a sim. Coming to terms with what's real and what's not. eventually ending it all... only to wake up in a vat and witness the real world for the second time just to have him knocked out and drugged and put back into the sim.

Or a story of a group of 'hackers' trying to infiltrate a farm, and accidentally killing hundreds of humans in the process trying to wake as many as they can. Sentinels attacking them left right and centre as they try their best to maintain a connection.

they can do a lot of stories set in the matrix. Not just about a man freeing people from the matrix.

Sure. But alongside the "a lot of stories" the studio will also want a tent-pole. Like, sure, there is the "young-Han Solo" Star Wars film, but there are also episodes 7, 8, 9.

They won't be content with just a "young-Trinity" Matrix film about how she "hacked the IRS D-base". ("- Uh.. I thought you were a guy. - Most guys, do." Really love how the Wachowskis had their female fantasies in the open since day 0 of their career, starting with Bound.)

They will also look into getting any of the original cast back if possible etc. for no$talgia purpo$e$.

The big film news story this week, without a doubt, is the purported reboot of “The Matrix” franchise which began in 1999.

Today, scribe Zak Penn spoke with fans on Twitter, and shot down all the talk of a reboot. He says the new series is more of a continuation:

Quote:
“Can’t comment yet except to say that the words ‘reboot’ and ‘remake’ were from an article. Let’s stop responding to inaccurate news. If I were going to recast Keanu Reeves, I would cast Keanu Reeves. Do I want to see more stories set in the universe of the matrix? Yes. Because it’s a brilliant idea that generates great stories. Look at what people are doing with Xmen universe. Between Logan and Legion and Deadpool, does anyone want them to stop? Not me.”

Because thanks to Deadpool I became totally convinced I need to see "Old Frodo - A Lord of the Rings story" and "Back to the Future: ZER0". Not.

I mean The Matrix universe is absolutely one where you can tell stories upon stories. But let's wait and see what they greenlight first.

Quite possibly by the time the first new Matrix film will start moving forward Penn will have been replaced by another 2-3+ writers, as the try different approaches.

"Young Morpheus" prequel incoming.

http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2017/03/17/the-new-matrix-may-be-a-young-morpheus-movie

Quote:
And that's true: WB is not interested in rebooting The Matrix, but rather in exploring expanded universe concepts. And according to two independent sources we've spoken with, one idea that's gained a lot of support is a prequel film starring Michael B. Jordan as a young Morpheus.

Our understanding is that a Morpheus film has long been a concept favored by the folks at Warner Bros.
The studio has established a writer's room (a sure-fire sign that WB is gunning for multiple films/franchises), and our further understanding is that this Morpheus idea is one of several being kicked around.
