I was recently given an early 2011 Macbook Pro from a friend who says an OS update bricked the laptop, and recovery, and internet recovery do not work.

I've confirmed the hard drive is working; I was able to install windows 8.1(gasp) on it.

I've tried burning a few DVD's (only to have them spit out later) and have also tried building a few bootable usb's using a tool called Transmac, however I cannot boot into the OSX installer for the various versions I tried (10.6, 10.7, 10.Cool

I do not have access to a mac and was hoping for a solution if anyone has any suggestions how to reinstall OSX.
Thanks!

It is unusual that internet recovery doesnt work. Normally from there you can get into the installation app that lets you format the drive.

You can do a hardware test. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257

You can always do a few NVRAM resets (Its recommended to do 3 consecutive ones), but I doubt that it will solve the problem. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063

Or an smc reset. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

It is also possible to boot osx from an usb stick if it is installed on that stick. But you'd need to get into the installer first, so that idea wont work and without USB3, would be extremely slow aswell.

There is no easy solution if you cant get into the installer either way.

I'd recommend removing the disk putting it into another mac and installing osx on it from there.
If you're still on a HDD I'd recommend getting an SSD anyway. OSX still performs pretty good even on C2Ds with SSDs. That would make the machine usable again.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Starting with 10.9 you need to use 'createinstallmedia' console app to create a boot media.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372

So, get access to another Mac or install / acquire a VMware image.
