http://deadline.com/2016/04/tom-cruise-the-edge-of-tomorrow-sequel-joe-shrapnel-anna-w-1201733530/

(That's not the final title of course but I had to put something.)

The real news is they hired some writers, Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, writers of Race. Christopher McQuarrie, writer of the original (well one of them; he was hired to rewrite the script 2 months before filming started), will produce and help them develop the story.

Doug Liman will return as director.

It's unknown if they can manage to find a way for Blunt to reprise her role. We also don't have a release date as this is the beginning of the development process which means it's not a certainty that the movie will be made and it won't be stuck in development hell or anything else.. but let's remain hopeful.

edit technically the article doesn't say that Cruise will be in it, I suppose that was me jumping the gun. But I believe they won't greenlit the film if the star doesn't return.

Christopher McQuarrie not writing but producing smells like Nolan + Men of Steel. Cash job for McQuarrie. Shame, because he is a very good writer, on top of being a very good director.

I have the same feeling. The original movie was such a pleasant surprise for me, that I'm inevitably ready for some sad trombone moments here. Razz I'm still very much looking forward to it though, that goes without saying.

@Consolitis: my optimism won! Very Happy Laughing

What a weird comparison to make.

What is weird about it?
How open did the film leave this world to warrant a sequel? Did the ending scream at you "fuck yeah, can't want to see what happens next!!"? (Other than the possible Cruise/Blunt sex scene Laughing )
So now, a story needs to be shoehorned. The original writer who created this world is gone, but "producing".

I will say this about this - Cruise has very few terrible films. Especially last few years, Cruise seems to push for quality. Even his lesser flicks, like Oblivion, are good and above. So it may come out good due to Cruise pushing more quality and having enough power with Warner Bros. But this does not change the fact that McQuarrie is just getting paid to namedrop, now that his name has star power.

I agree. But that's not what you had said. That's not what I responded to.

McQuarrie hardly created that world. He was one of the many screenwriters.

But that too is beside the point.

My point is: Like I said your comparison is weird. McQuarrie for Edge of Tomorrow is not what Nolan was for Batman.

I'm not saying you are wrong or right regarding McQuarrie's new duties, I'm saying that's a pretty bad comparison to make.

“I’ve had some radical ideas about how to make a sequel that would interest me, in the same way that I had ideas of how you make an independent film and then Swingers came along and it was like ‘Aha, that’s the perfect movie for me to test these ideas out on.’ I had these intellectual ideas on how you should make a sequel that are unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and this script and this idea fit perfectly into that idea. So it’s gonna revolutionize how people make sequels. And again that’s why I try to do things like Invisible that are just, the revolution’s sort of built into the idea. It’s more heresy in the film world for me to pitch things that are sort of unheard of.”

How do you do a sequel to that story Scratch Head well they gotta try and milk it I guess.

The first one was based on a Japanese manga which was a lot different, read better, than the movie http://www.forbes.com/sites/olliebarder/2015/11/01/the-manga-of-all-you-need-is-kill-is-everything-edge-of-tomorrow-should-have-been/#3bd49ffb6fb8

Since it's not straight up a prequel, that implies that

a) there will be time travel to the past, that's why it starts as a sequel but becomes a prequel

or

b) there will be a sequel story but with flashbacks to the past and how those relate to the present (think LOST).

thats a stupid name, there is no way that will be the final title

if THAT is the final title, ill fucking eat a sandwich.

i know they changed the first films name to that live die repeat nonsense, but i have to believe that name recognition is NOT strong enough to base the sequel title around.

How can a plot like that having a sequel, exactly?

Aliens upgraded to the knowledge of 5th dimension?

I hope it's at least based on the actual book, as for the first.
