http://www.recode.net/2016/9/16/12933780/average-app-downloads-per-month-comscore

First quote:

Quote:
Half of U.S. smartphone users download zero apps per month

Ok, seems leggit. I get that. The chart seems also to agree with that.

Next quote:

Quote:
Thirteen percent of smartphone owners account for more than 50 percent of all app downloads.

I think I'm too stupid to get that. You are allowed to make fun of me now.

Here is the chart:

From this chart I read that 13% of all users download in average exactly 1 app per month.

There are also users who download exactly 2, 3, 4 apps per month or in a range of 5 to 7, and the last category are users who download 8 or more apps per month on average.

You have now the choice to explain to me why 13% of all users account for more than 50% of all downloads ...

... or simply make fun of me for being too stupid to get that.

It's YOUR choice.

it just means 13% of the overall smartphone owners are responsible for half of all app downloads. has nothing to do with the 13% in that chart though

Maybe the '5 to 7' and '8+' users, when put together, account for 50%+ of the apps downloads. Put together, they're 13% of the userbase. But the amount of apps they download could account for over half. Especially since we would only be tracking people who download app, not the 49% who don't anymore.
Or maybe we just can't use that chart, since in fact we shouldn't use one in which the 49% who don't download shouldn't be in the chart to reach the 13%. I'm not sure.

what they basically mean is the top 13% of users (with highest download numbers)
are responsible for 50% of total downloads.

the stats are just not defined clearly enough.

and yes, the 13% on the image are from a different statistic and completely unrelated, just old.unlucky number 13 screwing with you.

Can't you tally them up? Wouldn't you get the expected number of app downloads per group of users by doing
0*0.49 + 1*0.13 + 2*0.11 + 3*0.08 + 4*0.06 = 0.83 apps for the group consisting of 49%+13%+11%+8%+6% = 87% percent of all people

For the other 13% you may go with the most conservative numbers (5 for 5-7) and 8 for 8+ and end up with
5*0.07+8*0.06 = 0.83 apps again

That would be the same amount, aka 50% at least. Make sense?

Basically this graph divides ALL users into 7 types and shows their respective relative amount. These 7 types describe how many apps a user downloads. Hence if you multiply the amount of apps with the relative amount of a respective type you get the expected number of apps downloaded by that type. If you aggregate all types into 2 groups (first 5, last 2) you can sum their expected number of downloads which gives the result above. Then the numbers check out and the graph would thus actually work as the source of their statement.

Maybe with these 2 graphs. Upper one shows in red the relative amount of users within a group. In blue it shows the expected amount of downloads per group, e.g. 2 Downloads * 11% = 0.202 downloads from that group.
Obviously the groups who download much more but aren't so much more infrequent contribute more the amount of downloads. If you stack the two right most blue bars you should end up with 50% of all blue bars. If you stack up the rightmost red bars you end up with 13% of all.

Lower graph depicts such a stacked bar graph. Left side depicts the amount of people in the groups, eg. brown is the ~50% group of 0 downloads users. The right depicts the number of downloads, except I normalized it, so that the sum of all is 100%.

The two upper left green parts are the ~13% responsible for the 50% downloads depicted on the right.

Does this help?

1. the odd numbers are missing in the x axis of the first graph.

2. you didn't group 5,6,7 downloads together, instead to put it all on 5.

3. the lower graph uses ugly brown colors and dirty shades of red and orange, I don't like it!

Now what?

1. irrelevant

3. irrelevant - small changes of rgb triplets don't always yield pretty coleurs

2. Erhm. The 5 to 7 have always been one group and you can't divide them based on the graph. I merely picked 5 as the most consersative value, because we don't know the distribution within the group and thus not their actual contribution to all downloads. If we consider all to be 5 we have the lower bound.

You don't care do you?
