The 7 biggest problems facing science, according to 270 scientists.
Quote: | Science is in big trouble. Or so we’re told. In the past several years, many scientists have become afflicted with a serious case of doubt — doubt in the very institution of science. As reporters covering medicine, psychology, climate change, and other areas of research, we wanted to understand this epidemic of doubt. So we sent scientists a survey asking this simple question: If you could change one thing about how science works today, what would it be and why? We heard back from 270 scientists all over the world, including graduate students, senior professors, laboratory heads, and Fields Medalists. They told us that, in a variety of ways, their careers are being hijacked by perverse incentives. The result is bad science. |

Depressing read. Most of the points is something you wil probablyl run into fairly early in a science education/career.
Money trouble, very uncertain career, long working hours, changing working places away from familiy and friends is in my opinion that largest deal breakers.

Yup, the past years you see them becoming more vocal on those issues. On a personal level: What I always hated growing up was everything being stuck behind a paywall, it was something my mind just couldn't get. Really annoyed me at times I think it has more effect on people not getting interested in the field than it just being 'boring'.
I don't necessarily agree with your largest deal breakers though. Most of us have to deal with money trouble, uncertainty in career and long working hours or hours that are not really suited towards having a life in some form.
That being said scientists should be less dependable on pumping out papers and especially the 'popular' gamey papers to get noticed/sure grands. It's good to see initiatives like: Center for Open Science... (got mentioned on something youtubed ) read up on them a month ago. My guess is that we will see more of those things along the way. Self correcting community after all.
A thing I'm a bit worried about is that the general public and media will use this: 'Science is broken' in a bad way again. Dismissing everything because the tv and scientists themselves say it is broken. Bit like the arguments: "they are so often wrong that I don't believe anything."
Good article that sums it all up in one place.

Only the US knows science. The rest of the world ask them if they're doing it right. I know this because I watch Discovery.
