|
 |
Quote: | Horror games can conjure a wide range of emotions, from disgust and panic to the lingering pangs of existential dread.
The scariest games excel at nailing just one or two of these feelings really well, or send us on an unrelenting rollercoaster fueled by all manner of terror. With that criteria in mind, we set out to name the top ten scariest games ever made. Let’s begin.
10. Dead Space
9. Enemy Zero
8. Outlast
7. DayZ
6. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly
5. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
4. Resident Evil HD
3. P.T.
2. Amnesia: The Dark Descent
1. Silent Hill 2 |

Have you seen PC Gamer's latest travesty("100 best PC games ever")? The #1 jumped 41 spots and the #2 jumped 57 spots from last year's list. The entire top 10 is post-Xbox 360 launch. Rocket League is #8. A total of 8 games out of 100 were released before 2000.
The one and only thought that goes into these lists from gamejournos is "gotta get clicks".

I thought Undying and Shadow Man were scary when I was younger, don't know how they hold up now.

ugh.. evil within traumatised me pretty hard it should be here.
i think dark souls should be on the list. that game fucking terrifies me.. probably for different reasons though (go on, say it.. SAY IT YA BASTARDS!!)
i dont think soma was scary, just tense.
dont get me wrong, i fucking loved it and it had one of the most genuinely interesting stories ive played, but it was oozing with amazing atmosphere, but it never really set out to scare you.

For me the Dead Space series was superb in terms of jump scares and general dread ambiance.

Yeah they were amazing.. especially Undying which started with a terrifying bang. They're still fun, but some of their suggestive magic gets inevitably lost because of the rudimentary assets.
Condemned is also missing, or Call of Cthulhu, and one would argue that Stalker can provide more pure moments of terror than any other game mentioned. Then again it's a clickbait-y list from IGN, what do they know.

Only time i can get slightly scared in horror games is if i play with headphones at night. Amnesia was a bit scary like that, have to play SOMA once i have completed Witcher 3..
Edit: and yeah, like someone said, Dark Souls is scary.. Because its both really intense and no fucking quick saves so you can go right back where you died, that's really important. Alien vs Predator (first one) was great because of this, then they patched it out because PC-players complained (have to laugh at PC players here, for once! )

Where the fuck is Alien Isolation? I literally lost the use of my legs for 10 seconds from one of the scares in that game.

Just finished Outlast. You have to turn on 2 etc before powering up... How many variations of that can you put in a game before it looks fucking lazy?
Ending was shit too, but it was a entertaining game!

Where is Dino Crisis? Or could be the fact that we played it at night when we were like 10 maybe, but it was scary as fuck, the first one that is. The later ones not so much.

I get scared too easily sadly. So I haven't finished most of the scary games I started.
Games where I have a weapon though, those are a lot less scary though, so Undying was not scary.
