If it just dies even when it's in bios wouldn't that almost guarantee that it's a power related issue?
(Battery has to go via the PSU too no? Just that it provides power from a separate source than when plugged in via cable.)
EDIT: Could be the motherboard too I assume but either of those would require returning the laptop and have them check it as I don't think you can do much yourself.
(And certainly not without voiding any warranties.)

Run Memtest86 to check the RAM?
And how you know its not getting hot? Do you just put your hands on the device, or run some software tool to read the temps?

It has no warranty anymore, and I use software to see the temps. It happens when I cold boot too (well cold is 30C now).
What I meant about the PSU is I thought it could be the power brick, but it isn't since it also happens on battery only.
Can't run memtest, it barely lasts enough time to boot now. (used to reboot every few hours, now it got worse)

I don't really have much experience with laptops but I tried searching around a bit.

Quote: |
Your computer can turn off due to: power overload in the AC adapter, overheated processor / clogged fan, overheated battery, pushing the power button, Windows telling it to, the BIOS telling it to, loose wires (especially the power cord), or intermittent short circuits.
|
Has some other info as well, I'm guessing hunting for short circuits and doing voltage testing or fixing the hardware yourself is a bit more complex but it might still provide some clues.
(I guess checking the fan could be helpful if it's just dust buildup, not exactly sure if a slow spinning fan or randomly stopping fan could cause a shutdown if temps still are fine but it's something that shouldn't be too difficult to check at least.)
(The story about a short circuit and dust buildup could help too, that laptop was around 1.5 years old when it started showing symptoms and then it got progressively worse.)

Fan is running well, no dust (I opened it to check capacitors and checked the fan as well).
Now I disabled intel speedstep and turbo to see if it changes anything, I'm thinking it could be a capacitor that regulates the CPU voltage (since it is under the CPU I cannot see it without disassembling everything). It's working so far, will see if it lasts...

edit: 20 minutes up and running on low power (speedstep and turbo disabled, locked at 800MHz & super low voltage), I guess I found the problem...
one question: can speedstep (or turbo) activate even when I am only looking at the bios? because it was shutting down in that situation when speedstep was active.

No is correct, yes.

Today i put all settings like they were before (speedstep and turbo on). It passed on memtest on the first pass (all tests), no errors. Shutdown in the middle of second pass. Cpu was stable at 75C, which is fine.

The guy managed to fuck the boot managers of both Windows and Linux

Gave him until Monday to run more tests. I think I'm doomed. |
Damn, that sucks. Dem silly laptops really are nasty contraptions when it comes to the simplest repairing procedure
I've been having exactly the same problem with my old Toshiba, which is understandable since it's from 2009, but still annoying since I need it from time to time. Initially I thought the battery had died definitively, but the culprit is somewhere else, all the temps are fine and the bios (extremely basic) are in super conservative mode, so it's puzzling indeed. I didn't try to bring it to the repairmen because in my case it's probably not even worth it, but it feels like losing a trusty companion
