Hey guys, just looking for some info regarding ram. From what i read there were some safety warnings regarding the 4790k and the ram voltage it should use. Can't recall exactly what it was but i think 1.65v wasn't recommended and it was stated 1.5v should be used instead.

Currently using a 2x4gb kit 1333mhz with XMP profile.

Now my question is... What's the best ram i could get for this and what should i be looking for? As far as i understood the most important thing is the timings and CL (the lower the better).

Looking to get a 2x8gb kit at around 2400mhz speed or so with XMP profile (this means it can auto OC itself right? otherwise if i dont enable it in bios it will be stock speed or have to oc it manually).

So yeah, thanks in advance.

The Trident X kit I had on my Z97 worked rather nicely, good RAM, and fast.

I just ordered a pair of Geil evo potenza 16gb (2x8gb) 2400mhz cl11 11-13-13-30

It should be processed tomorrow/arrive maybe the day after. It was between this and the:

- corsair vengeance pro 2400mhz cl11 with 11-13-13-31 (1 more point on the last value)
- kingston hyperX 2400mhz cl11 with 11-13-13-31 (same as above)

The geil was cheaper by a bit and with better value i think? Did i make a good choice? Anything i should know before going through with this? Don't know much about the brand and it doesn't seem to be as popular as corsair/kingston/gskill.

Thanks.

Uh, okay, i seem to have gained around 20-25 fps on minimum fps in cpu bound games (WoW) for example, same spot, same crowd.. on max view distance.

I'm speechless. If i knew about this would have replaced it ages ago.

Will test some more but so far i'm still in shock.

Awesome! Very Happy

It's nice to see that faster RAM indeed gives a noticeable performance boost in some games.

Yeah only thing i'm worried about is that i noticed my cpu spiking up to higher temps for a few sec (82, mostly sitting at 71-76 though). I guess because of the increased voltage for the XMP.

Any idea if i have anything to worry about?

of course it does! and you always said it here and it's true.
i hate it when people say stuff like "this isn't true. it's not faster just buy the slower one its enough" just because they bought slow ram or cpus or anything for themself.
same with an i7 6700k. "it's a total overkill just get something cheaper it's more then enough" yea just that it's worth it and games use it full potential most of the time.

is it because they don't know it better or whats the reason for people putting lies like these out there. faster ram is faster. end of discussion.

yep, it's mostly the case of people having pride in what they bought. kinda like brand loyalty with gpu's.

or it's the usual, casual gamer who plays 5 mainstream triple A titles per year, which are in most cases, simpler, GPU limited games, speaking from his limited experience.

I am kinda glad that's the case though. that's why I was able to offload my 2 x 4 1600mhz sticks and only paid 40 bucks for 2x8 2400mhz Very Happy

@freiwald
Well in my case i mostly look on Computerbase forum for advices on upgrades, because i had the impression of people with knowledge being active there.
Most people there said MHz on RAM don't really matter. I believed that, and never bothered to actually look for some benchmarks of that.

Well, seeing how on that forum 80% seem to be AMD fanatics anyways, i will do my next research better. Laughing

Uh.. funny thing this.

Origin was adding around 7-8 degrees to my cpu only by being left on start-up. What the fuck? >.< (was using like 15% of my cpu, so didn't seem like much).
Now im down in the mid-60's in games.

That said, no bsods since then so i guess the mobo update helped *knocks on wood*

still check your temps!! your cpu goes way to high. i always try to never go above 70-75° with prime so that it stays around max 55-65° in games.
check your paste and clean it probably, also maybe it's not mounted properly. it's really way to high Crying or Very sad

Well max i'm seeing now is 65 degrees in games. So should be fine. I'm pretty sure a cleanup/repaste would do it good but prolly after i'm back from the holidays.
