http://www.bbc.co.uk/torchwood/

Summary:

A spin-off from the "Doctor Who" series, Torchwood follows the adventures of a team of investigators as they use alien technology to solve crimes, both alien and human. This British sci-fi crime thriller, from Russell T Davies, follows the team as they delve into the unknown. They are fighting the impossible while keeping their everyday lives going back at home.

The cast includes John Barrowman as the enigmatic Captain Jack Harkness, the ever-watchful heart of the team guarding against the fragility of humankind.
Eve Myles plays Gwen Cooper, initially an outsider whose first encounter with Torchwood sparks a burning curiosity to get to the truth and throws her into an unfamiliar but exciting world. Burn Gorman plays the raw but charming medic, Owen Harper, and Naoko Mori is Toshiko Sato, the team member who specialises in all things technical.

Did anyone in the UK see this tonight on BBC Three? It was a lot better than I expected it to be. Its very much like a Doctor Who for adults with quite a lot of harsh language and some pretty good special effects. I have never been a big fan of british science fiction or drama. Its nothing compared to the american shows and just like Doctor Who, it still had that distinct cheesy and tacky british feel about it. However, I thought it was very entertaining and I intend to stick with it. Im sure it will appear on Usenet for those who didnt see it or are unable to watch UK television. Very Happy

was quite baffled by this
dr.who was obviously a kids' show for it's naivety, and this spinoff clearly shares a lot with that
but it also has cursing, graphic violence and sex
hell, it even had a masturbation scene
who is this series targeted to?

i think its great Very Happy nice to see they had the balls to do something more like the people who watched the old doctor who would want instead of some kids bullshit

...so adding cursing, sex and violence, but leaving everything else just a naive as dr.who, makes it a more mature show?
does that mean that jackass isn't immature afterall?

not putting the show down.. it could be great.. but it's just a hilarious conflict of word, meaning, intention and marketing Smile

I decided not to give this a go, after I saw that it was a UK show. I figured it couldn't be any good if it was, since i've never seen a good serious UK show without a bunch of silly jokes in it, or poor effects.

I'll however check it now, I doubt i'll like it though. -_-

I'm not comparing it to Dr Who or anything, but boy was Dr Who bad. -_-

I agree. Doctor Who was bad and despite being in the country I think most UK science fiction and drama is bad. This however has potential. Shouldnt have been set in Cardiff tho ffs! Laughing

On 7 June 2010, it was confirmed that Torchwood will be returning as a co-production between BBC Cymru Wales, BBC Worldwide and US premium entertainment network Starz for a fourth series consisting of 10 episodes. John Barrowman and Eve Myles will be returning to the series which will feature locations from around the world. The show has transitioned its broadcast channel every year since its inception, moving from BBC Three to BBC Two to BBC One, and acquiring US financing in its fourth series.

Children of Earth was fantastic, the two series before it were shite.

So with this being back to the old style, I hold out little hope for it.

Dr. Who and Torchwood are strange. I'm keep feeling awkward when I watch them and constantly asking myself "what the fuck am I watching?". But I can't resist Very Happy
Both are so silly/awkward most of the times but somehow also entertaining.

I already dislike it. Just like everything else Uhhmerica get their fucking grubby hands on, it's ruined. Humour, characters, pacing, plot... everything. Killed. Ruined. Instead we're left with some typically American brash bullshit with loads of screaming and running and yelling and cop drama.

Nice to see Torchwood, an institute founded by the royal family hundreds of years ago, with the full and complete backing of the United Kingdom's government, with the only true alien technology -- and ALIEN! -- in the world, has now become the owned by the CIA.

Yippee.

~edit~

It's still creepy though. At least they haven't killed THAT aspect off.

It's only ten episodes, so I'll watch it at least... but Ep1 of Torchwood UK grabbed me immediately. It was a fantastic show with great storylines and acting. So far this just rings hollow :\
