|
 |
I have just identified the loudest fan in my system, the PSU.
It sounds to be running at full speed after a very short time of gaming.
6700k CPU under 40c - 980Ti GPU under 70c all system fans and cpu fans running pretty much silent.
I have an Akasa Venom 750 watt modular PSU.
Is this normal or do you think it is on it's way out struggling?
This happens say after 2 laps in Project cars as an example

is it maybe dusty?
i had it too with 980ti and gtx780 then again i have SeaSonic S12II 520 which is like 5 years old so it was probably struggling, plus i had to modify one of the 6 pin into 8 pin to start the card, no crashes or performance issues however, but yeah pCars and maxed out ACS gave me loud psu fan

How old is it? Personally I'm not aware of any quality PSU from Akasa. Regardless of that I suggest you to replace it with a new one if your current one is more than than 4 years old.

It's a couple of years old now.
I've given it a blast out (careful) with compressed air and i have turned it around to exhaust into the case.
I'm not convinced there is enough clearance under my case to have it pushing air out from underneath efficiently. Also swapped plugs into different rails to test.
Will let you know what happens. Can you guys recommend a good high end PSU, i think a 850 Watt will be enough, i'm not planning on SLI.

bronze is not exactly a high end
i'd go with Seasonic G650 650W 80+ Gold or Seasonic Platinum Series 660

what case do you have?
650 watt should be more than enough for your setup, whether it's bronze, gold or platinum, you only pay for efficiency in this case
on paper your psu is pretty good 12v@62a, do you experience any other problems besides fan noise?

One of the Corsair PSU's I owned had a known issue with that model having a faulty fan controller, thankfully I had mine fixed after the first RMA but the problem with this was that the PSU fan was running full-speed all the time, if your PSU is only increasing the fan-speed during activity that would draw more power it's probably not quite the same fault.
PSU's also apparently lose a bit of their effectiveness over time naturally but I am not at all versed in how much of a issue this is or how much of a actual effect it has.
EDIT: Depending on model you can sometimes unscrew the PSU "shroud" though obviously make sure it's disconnected before attempting that and some models aren't easy to disassemble at all.
(Helps with cleaning them out though compressed air can be good too since it's primarily for the fan unit.)
EDIT:
Oh you're "KO'ed"... or well I guess "temporarily inactive" or what to call it as I assume it's a temporary 1 - 2 day off thing, that or someone is just messing with the titles again.
(EDIT: Altered text slightly, and going by the post below it seems I can still never tell when it's for real or for laughs, perhaps it could be color coded depending on severity, as is already done with problematic posters having their user name appear in red...)

When you get banned your title goes poof and banned is in place. An admin has to change it back. Ask a mod if you want your old one back... I always assumed you liked the Banned title xD

it's a decent case the only problem is that i see it has no legs, meaning if you place psu fan down it has nothing to suck air from, but you already placed it fan up so it should be good, in any case probably fan sensor had some dust on it, shit happens, as long as it's stable no need to worry

After more testing, its still running full speed and getting quite hot!
I'm not going to fuck around anymore i'm just going to buy a new one.
Seasonic Platinum 660 seems suitable.
It's a shame they don't do a bigger fanless PSU, this looks interesting
Seasonic Platinum Fanless 520W
Although a PSU calculator says i only need a 440w PSU would i have enough headroom with a 520w!

yeah, you would be fine for a while. you would just need to replace a PSU sooner as it would degrade below the needed treshold much sooner.
650w is the sweet spot for single gpu systems as you get the comfort of longevity.
i'd look here if you want the cream of the crop.

I have Seasonic Platinum 660, it has hybrid mode button, which means that PSU fan will not even spin up untill like 50% power draw or so. I have 4790k and 780ti and i have never heard my psu fan even starting up. I measured my power draw from socket and it was max like 375w or so.

All fans have been replaced with corsair ones.
I checked and you are correct, recommended PSU is a 500 - 550W for my setup.
I can't remember now, it was a long time ago. I was asking what had happened to our title editing privileges as i used to have 'Invert Freak' pertaining to my mousing preference in games. I ended up with the title 'Banned' instead |
500W recomended my ass
I have 4790k and 980Ti and I manage to pull 375W+ in stock settings from the wall socket for just the case
with a little OC you'll easily break 400W..
at least 600W for this configuration

naaah, you should get a proper device to measure what it sucks. combination of the 4790k and a 980ti should barely reach 300w usage

it is maybe nice to have 300 watt overhead but completely unnecessary
measured my setup today and it was hovering in between 325-350 with firestrike test

i like the fact that 290 is rated at 300 tdp which it never reaches
the gigabyte version that i got also oc to 1040

tdp != watt usage
its just a theoretical value which could be reached with all clusters etc working @ maximum (which cant even be reproduced with benchmarks like furmark cause in most cases its just impossible that every part of the gpu would work at 100% simultaneously)
