http://www.valvetime.net/threads/half-life-1997-alpha-preview-disc-leaked.243023/

Quote:
An intrepid Redditor going by jackaljayzer was lucky enough to get a Half-Life preview disc, intended for journalists at the time, by a friend in Bellevue, Washington (where Valve is based). The disc contains screenshots, trailers and a demo build of the Half-Life 1997 alpha.

Jackaljayzer has put the contents of the disc up on the web and is auctioning the disc on eBay. You can download the alpha right now from this link. To play the alpha delete or renamed the "...\Half-Life 0.52\Half-Life\Opengl32.dll" file and then run "...\Half-Life 0.52\Half-Life\enginegl.exe".

Gotta love those character models.

Those graphics are quite impressive given the circumstances. That high poly model looks really good.

For 1997 it looks incredible.

Either people have no memory of what games used to look like, or they are too young to know.

A lot of titles were still using sprites and such, this is just around when 3D performance made a nice jump thanks to new video cards, Quake engine was amongst the first and was followed by the Unreal Engine, probably I'm missing quite a bit of what happened but yeah for it's time this was pretty impressive.
(They did quite a overhaul with the quake engine comparing these images to how the final game looks.)

The tech is okay, the art is shit.

Fortunately Valve pulled their first "nope, not shipping Cool Face " delay, hired Marc Laidlaw, and reworked script, tone, art and voila, HL1 became one of the best games of all times.

BTW early synopsis included:

Quote:
The Portal Device is a dimension-spanning gate of unpredictable power, constructed in a decommissioned missile silo. So far no one has ventured through the Portal, but there has been a steady flow of odd creatures coming to our world. You are a weapons research scientist who has never touched a weapon—until now.

An accident in the Threshold’s power core fractures the local fabric of spacetime, and hordes of creatures begin spewing into our world through the fissures. Monsters are everywhere, and your co-workers are dropping like flies. You head for the surface but the usual routes are unpassable—damaged by the disaster and infested with monsters. The silo security guards are in a state of primal terror and looking for someone to blame. The obvious scapegoats are the scientists. Namely, you.

In your flight to the surface, you acquire a device which means the difference between victory and annihilation—but you don’t realize whose victory, until too late. As the Portal experiment’s first human subject, you are cast into the alien world to confront the ultimate horror…to cut off the invasion at its source. In Half-Life, you won’t just go head-to-head with an alien boss—you will fight it from the inside out.

It reads like some kind of HL x Portal fan-fiction, but it's the 1997 build's synopsis Razz

To me, it isn't. Yes, it's a decent title, but when I played it around 2000, I didn't understand what the all the buzz was for (one of the reasons I had almost nil excitement for the Black Mesa mod). It's a game I only remember when it gets mentioned on this forum.

HL2, on the other hand, was magnificent. One of the best shooters I've played.

there's your reason, you didn't understand it Laughing

Even though I know its just an opinion, somehow it always pisses me off when someone says hl1 is average and hl 2 is magnificent... FFS how could you ever feel that Very Happy

Anyways, some screenies for those of us that do know what half-life 1 is and fondly remeber the times when the modern FPS was born.

meh this cover doesn't even have bilinear filtering applied, when in 1997, many games already had support for it, specially most D3D games, as long as you had a Voodoo 1 or 2 card obviously.

Sure it did look impressive back then, but bilinear filtering was really a step up in the technology, removing all these shitty pixels.

I remember also 2 leaked beta of the game (Unreal), one might have been an alpha actually, was really primitive and didn't support bilinear filtering at all (only software renderer support IIRC).

Another one leaked a few month before the game shipped, and was pretty much complete except you had to load the levels manually or smthg like that.

Half-Life 1 beta gameplay and interviews:

I still remember this video when it was fresh. It was on a disc of one of the other Sierra games at that time. Notice how it uses parts of this tech demo. Also has some other game areas that look different that in full game.
