I have 2x4Gb 1666 Mhz DDR3. I want to buy another 2. I have an option to buy the exact same again, or exact same brand but at 2133Mhz.
Is there any point buying the slightly higher speed, considering the lower speed I already have?

i personally went from 2x4gb 1600mhz to 2x8gb 2400mhz. same brand, corsair vengeance pro. end cost after selling the 1600mhz sticks. was 40 bucks for that switch. this was like a month or so ago.
I'd recommend that route both because faster ram will help in cpu limited scenarios and enhance your CPU OC. It's also better for stability when OC'ing to have 2 sticks instead of 4.
z97 chipset is also dual channel, so 4 sticks won't be of any benefit.
As for mixing speeds, your 2133mhz ram will simply run at 1600 to match the slower sticks. so essentially just a waste of dough unless you manage to OC the slower ram. and even then, you will end up with crappy timings on both sticks so they are even at both speed and latency.

@Kaltern
I would chose the higher clocked RAM.
There are a few games out there, where you notice quite a difference in performance with them.
Enthoo Evolv ATX TG // Asus Prime x370 // Ryzen 1700 // Gainward GTX 1080 // 16GB DDR4-3200

Thanks guys. Gonna buy the faster speed I think, and drop the old memory into a different PC.. then buy some more at a later date. I'm getting Viper 3 Black Mamba 2133 2x4Gb for £32 which is a steal right now. (Amazon)

yeah, they are selling 2x4 combos for cheap now as it's starting to become a bare minimum for gaming PC's.
I'd really advise you to go for 2x8 at this point it time, especially if you plan on keeping the rig for longer than a year.
once you inevitably go 4x4 to play newer ram hungry titles, you might not even be able to find the same brand of the ram you are buying now, and will then need to dish out more monies for a complete 16gb set+ the things i mentioned in the previous post.

Right now, I simply can't afford that, 2x8 seems to be far more expensive (relative to 2x4 I mean), but I hope my financial situation is to improve within 6 months, at which point I'll probably upgrade to a Skylake DDR4 system.
I hope
