Many years ago i gifted my dad a WD My Passport 500GB Black. All worked great. Has stuff in it

The thing is, one day my dad told me that his PC wouldn't detect the HDD in My Computer (Windows 7) but he can extract the unit via the typical extract option from the taskbar.

When i connect the same device to my PC, after a couple of minutes it installed the SAS and some other drivers. The device is NOT in My Computer neither, BUT if i go to Start->Right click "Computer" then Administrate->Disk Administrator (or something where all connected HDDs appears) the HDD appears but as "Unassigned" and when it tries to "initialize" as MBR it brings out an error.

I'd like to know if there's any File Recovery software that could restore my dad's WD PP device in a flash using USB 3.0 or whatever. There's no hurries but the sooner the better.. And please ,in a way that it doesn't end up formatting the Device ^^;;;

Thanks in advance

R-Studio does such jobs great since a lot of years for me.

Use that to make a backup of the drive, then scan the drive completey for failures. if nothing is found it most likely just fucked up its filetable cause of not using safe removal feature

Testdisk. Just recently recovered thousands of files with it from a colleagues external WD Passport.

I used it without tutorials. Just attach it, if it is listed there, you will most likely be lucky! Just assume that it's an intel partitioned device and read carefully what is written on screen. It lacks a GUI, but it's a very solid tool. Saved my own ass several times too. I don't know what I would have done without it :')

Used this because it seemed close to my probs: http://www.sevenforums.com/software/190430-regain-lost-drive-using-test-disk-illustrated-guide.html

BUT on Step 8, it says "Partition Read Error" but it keeps on doing a process on the HDD (I know it's the extHDD because when i chosen the supposed device, it's light started to BLINK many times and it takes 2 fucking minutes to get to the next step/refresh the progress)

Steps after 8 didn't popped up (No green texts, no "write",etc)

Spent the night with the program on a laptop and when i woke up it rebooted the system, the HDD was connected...BUT NOT SHOWN ON "MY COMPUTER"

Now i'd really ask for a tutorial...

"rrrrrrrr" as spinning i guess, or like "Hey, i'm powered". Nothing "out of normal" i guess.

any chance to open that fucking case and connect it directly? 4k emulation shouldnt be a problem with a small 500gb drive

I opened the case (easy) and it seems that this extHDD, since it's pretty old, only has Micro USB slot as a connector alternative.I connected my PS4's USB->MicroUSB cable to it and my PC.

What now?. Should i repeat the process or..?. It's still as slow as before

After i pressed Enter for Quick Search it blinks it's light, but either does nothing or wait a few mins for saying "I'm doing something" just to find out it does nothing in the end. Another laptop night?

It keeps "Rrrrrrr" 'ing but no spin disking.

can you make a pic of the blank drive? you should be able to simply remove the attached usb controller to have the "normal" sata connectors

think the controller is the issue at all, so we need it blank

gnarf, they had different models. one with soldered usb connectors and one with just plugged in usb connectors. if its the first case here you are fucked

im very sorry but in this case it seems all data on that drive are lost until you are willing to spend about ~-150-200 euros for a professional data recovery. r-studio reports massive read errors either cause the drive itself has a major problem or the usb controller (thats my first thought) is damaged and produces that shit

Not my fault this time eh. This is a "Portable, licensed" R-Studio "Network edition". Even the SMART section for the extHDD says it's health is in CAUTION yellow area.

Unless i must look for another version, wich one should i DL?. One that could repair or whatever + tutorial

doesnt matter, they changed the name. network edition is the same as standard but can be installed on more pcs or whatever.

i assume ultra-dma-failure rates going amok with the smart values? but plz post a pic of the smart screen (use crystaldiscinfo for example)

you could try using a disc cloner to make a complete image of the disk and trying to rescue data from that image. that might work if the controller isnt the problem (though in that case r-studio should run through the scan fine too normally)

Mount image, then copy the files from the image to an actual HDD. Got it (Like an ISO file)

Be careful regarding removing wd from their case, I read that you shouldn't do that.

if the software is able to grab data besides junk files (which may happen due to faulty drive or usb controller as i said). if that doesnt work you might think about professional data rescue, but as i said- > its expensive

@pumpy: only fucks up drives with 4k emulation of the usb controller. but doenst apply to small 500gb drives. they only need to do this with 2tb+
