I was just reading this thread on Duke 4 where people were mentioning a rumored Duke Nukem 3D re-release:

https://forums.duke4.net/topic/8720-if-3dr-gets-back-the-duke-nukem-rights-could-we-see-new-dn3d-content/

Apparently Gearbox has contracted a developer to make a new episode which will include a new lighting engine and new voice lines from Jon St. John. The forum admin/EDuke32 project lead TerminX confirmed it's real because he saw their work firsthand and made some of his own contributions (he says this in post #51). This also corresponds to Randy Pitchford's statement last year that Gearbox was looking to partner with another developer for a Duke game:

Cool but you should post it in the main forum. Re-releases - especially with added content - are treated as new releases.

1. Really? pretty shameless attempt at cash grab, how many versions of this game are there now?
2. Because Alien: Colonial Marines worked out so well last time gearbox "partnered"

didn't duke forever already prove that the franchise's time has passed and it deserves to stay dead?
this is not a timeless masterpiece
it was solidly fixed in time in the 90s ironic take on 80s tropes
there's just no way they can make unapologetic sexism work today
or they would have to make it some pro level mature satire about masculine insecurity
and there's no way that would work without making the fanbase lose their shit

I think the fanbase would mostly care for it to be a good game. See Shadow Warrior reboot.

Not that I see what the IP's future has to do with the re-release. Duke 3D was re-released 3 years ago as a "Megaton Edition". This was later recalled as Devolver Digital's license ran out.

This is simply meant to re-re-release the game to digital stores and add a small amount of new content for added value.

Doom came back and proved that theory wrong. A proper Duke Nukem would do just as well today as Doom did recently.

Duke forever proved nothing. They modernized it waaaay too much, and it was generally a steaming pile of shit.

To me it's like if From software made a dark souls with a happy setting with pink unicorns and people would scorn them for it, you'd say that the franchise's time had passed when it was simply due to a shitty product and not franchise fatigue.
