Quote:
Rogue One is the title for the first film in a unique series of big-screen adventures that explores the characters and events beyond the core Star Wars saga. Rogue One will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and written by Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (Cinderella, About a Boy, Antz). The first actress cast is Felicity Jones, who garnered an Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim for her performance in The Theory of Everything. The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (Band of Brothers, The Pacific) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce. The film starts shooting this summer in London and is due for release on December 16, 2016.

Mehh, i hoped they would release perhaps more each year, but we'll have to buckle up and endure spinoffs between the main saga.

News on this today.

- Star Wars spin-off films will officially be called "Anthology" films
- ROGUE ONE IS THE FIRST STAR WARS SPIN-OFF/STAND-ALONE FILM

Director: Gareth Edwards

- A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans in Star Wars anthology film, "Rogue One"
- Felicity Jones will play a rebel soldier, a real person with flaws. Fear, humour, warmth
- Teaser footage opens with Obi Wan talking about the Jedi. Pan along craggy forested river canyon. Pan up to huge Death Star in the sky
- Rogue One will be based in an era of no Jedi. No god-like figure is coming to save anyone and the absence of Jedi hangs over the film
- Gareth confirms they don't start shooting Rogue One until this summer (Filming starts: Summer 2015)

Josh Trank won't be directing SW spin off #2. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/inside-a-star-wars-firing-792933

Apparently he is very unprofessional and he caused enough trouble during production of Fantastic 4 that Disney said yeah, no, gtfo from our picture.

Quote:
Trank, 30, had raised eyebrows in April when he didn’t appear as scheduled at a Star Wars celebration in Anaheim. At the time, both Disney and the director cited illness as the cause but multiple knowledgeable sources say the studio had asked the filmmaker not to attend while considering whether to proceed with him on the second spinoff in a planned series of films.

Indeed, producers on Fantastic Four, set for release July 30, are said to have faced great challenges pulling the film together given behavior described by one insider as “erratic” and at times “very isolated.” Trank did not offer clear direction, this person adds, saying, "If you've got someone who can't answer questions or who isn't sure or is in hiding, that's not good."

Two characters that look interesting to me. Of course they'll sacrifice themselves so that the woman can live. At some point in the movie it will happen.

I'd rather they lived and the pretty woman sacrifices herself for them instead! That'd be great! Much more interesting. Its a Mass Effect'ish suicide mission probably they'll all die.

That's like sacrificing Luke instead of Obi-Wan. Makes no sense if there are sequels to follow.

This is the stand-alone movie about how the Rebels obtained the Death Star plans. She's supposed to be a "regular" (not force user) grunt, not some girl doing heroics for 5 more movies, I don't think so anyway.

I know what it is and it was never said they sacrificed themselves to get the plans (I don't think Disney would like such a story in the first place).

With Disney's plan to make 1 SW movie every year they can't make 10 completely standalone films (aside of Ep7,8,9) and hope the public just happens to like all of them.

They will make 4-5, look which ones do well and make sequels to them. Meaning potentially any film of the first batch of the spinoff films could get a sequel.

Looks good.
My two bets:
- The girl in and the pretty boy behind her will romance.
- The two badasses on the right will deliver some good action scenes.
Thanks.

After the last one I'm grunting even more about this being about the death star... fucking get something else already. The universe could be a more interesting place than constant planet destroying weaponry. *sigh*

Hm, didn't know this was an episode 4 prequel. Not sure if I like that, the thing with the death star plans has been done enough (games and books)

It's the first SW spin off so of course it has to tie in very closely to the movies in order to guarantee people go and see it. There's no room for failure here they have to convince people that the spin offs contribute to the story as much as the sequel trilogy because there are going to be LOTS AND LOTS of them.

Meaning Darth Vader will be back in this film as a hook:

http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2015/07/07/darth-vader-will-menace-the-heroes-in-star-wars-anthology-rogue-one

and it is even said Cushing's Tarvin is being recreated as CGI:

Oh really? Rolling Eyes

That's why in my reaction there was the part: "After the last one I'm grunting even more about this being about the death star"

When I read about this one first I was thinking: Meh... again the deathstar. After TFA I feel even more strongly about it. Razz

Last shot before the title gives an obvious Hunger Games vibe. Greedy Disney wants the HG fan crowd in.
