Release Date: 5 Apr, 2016
Quote:
Enter the Gungeon is a bullet hell dungeon crawler following a band of misfits seeking to shoot, loot, dodge roll and table-flip their way to personal absolution by reaching the legendary Gungeon’s ultimate treasure: the gun that can kill the past. Select a hero and battle your way to the bot¬tom of the Gungeon by surviving a challenging and evolving series of floors filled with the dangerously adorable Gundead and fearsome Gungeon bosses armed to the teeth. Gather precious loot, discover hidden secrets, and chat with opportunistic merchants and shopkeepers to purchase powerful items to gain an edge.

The Gungeon: Enter the Gungeon – a constantly evolving bullet hell fortress that elegantly blends meticulously hand-designed rooms within a procedurally-generated labyrinth bent on destroying all that enter its walls. But beware – the Gungeon responds to even the most modest victory against its sentries and traps by raising the stakes and the challenges found within!

The Cult of the Gundead: The Gungeon isn’t just traps and chasms – calm your nerves and steady your aim as you face down the gun-totting Cult of the Gundead. These disciples of the gun will stop at nothing to put down the heroes in their tracks and employ any tactics necessary to defend their temple.

The Gungeoneers: Choose between one of several unlikely heroes, each burdened by a deep regret and in search of a way to change their past, no matter the cost. Filled with equal parts courage and desperation, these adventurers won’t hesitate to dive across flaming walls, roll through a wall of bullets, or take cover behind whatever is around to make it to their goal alive!

The Guns: Discover and unlock scores of uniquely fantastic guns to annihilate all that oppose you in the Gungeon – each carrying their own unique tactics and ammunition. Unleash everything from the tried and true medley of missiles, lasers, and cannonballs to the bizarrely effective volley of rainbows, fish, foam darts, and bees! Yep, bees.

yeah but unlike the "psychological mysterious horror genre" you can easily differenciate the bad ones and good ones , especially when one is backed by devolver

Watched a bit of TB's stream and it does look pretty good. As always, variety is key with these games and this looks like it has a shit ton of weapons.

No 30 FPS lock either, so it'll actually be playable for people with eyes!

Around 1 GB when unpacked, kinda funny how it compresses down to just 180 MB, guess Unity is made up of mostly air, and zeroes. Razz

Played it up until the second floor (Barely managed to beat the boss, Gatling Gull.) and yeah it's really fun so far, plays like a shoot-em-up a bit like Binding of Isaac where you explore randomly generated dungeons descending ever deeper into the "Gungeon" for better weapons, passive bonus items and more while battling various types of ammo and other creatures, really nice animations and excellent sound and music too. Smile

Bit buggy (Doesn't seem to want to remember some options such as that I've disabled the VSync setting.) but nothing too problematic so far, uses Unity 5 but as a pixel-art game it runs really well.
(Uses D3D9 and it's 32-bit.)

Really has that feeling of you just wanting to explore one more room, one more floor again and again. Very Happy
(Three different starting characters too with varied equipment and skills I think.)

EDIT: Oh and yeah tons of weapon designs and a lot of humor too, numerous hidden secrets as well and probably helluva difficult once you get past the tutorial and first floor though the first floor can be tricky too depending on what you encounter.

Nuclear Throne is a 30 FPS lock abomination so it's not even worth mentioning.

The game was locked at 250+ FPS yesterday and now the game randomly gets stuck at 30-35.

Halp, it feels like I'm playing that horrible Nuclear Throne Sad

It randomly fixes itself, but it's really annoying.

It's quite nice. I just wish there was difficulty setting. Because no matter how long I practice games like these, I am terrible at them and keep dying in first two levels Laughing

It's a rogue ("lite") so each run is unique although you do save any unlocks you purchase from the equipment unlock store and a few certain plot items are saved as well if you make it far enough to give them to the NPC on the lower levels.

There's five levels and it'll take a bit of practice to beat the first one, then it gets really difficult and once you pass that it gets brutally difficult so you will die over and over again and that means starting over at the first floor or at the hub so you can choose another character.

Also any encountered NPC's when you do a run are generally saved such as freeing them from certain cells might make them available in the hub when you next return there.

Lots of secrets to discover as well so while you could theoretically finish the game in an hour or so if you somehow got past all five levels flawlessly that's only a small part of the full game.

It's like Binding of Isaac essentially and well other similar games though it's not quite as advanced as the full Rogue games.

Thanks for the explanation JBeckman. I've seen that term thrown around so much and apparently never knew what it actually meant.

Rogue is normally used for a genre of games where you usually control a character through a randomly generated dungeon with numerous difficult encounters and conditions such as permanent death.
(Food and water can play a role, wandering/roaming encounters, permanent debilitating conditions such as diseases or curses and the ever popular traps to name some things.)

Rogue-lite or Roguelike as it's also often called takes part of this design but makes it a bit more accessible, it varies heavily from game to game where some only have the randomly generated dungeon parts and others implement nearly everything but in a more modern graphical style than say ascii.

This game in addition to taking parts of the Rogue game mechanics also takes a lot from a genre of shoot-em-ups known as bullet hells where the screen is literally spammed by bullets you have to dodge or avoid, used for a lot of side-scrolling action games but also in other genres.

Here you basically have ever more challenging enemy designs that early on might shoot a few bullets here and there but towards the end the entire screen might fill up with projectiles.

Gameplay is also heavily dependent on the random number generator so a bad run might see you with almost no equipment all the way to the boss whereas on the next run you might find a small arsenals worth of weaponry and support items.
(Enemy encounters and floor layout also plays a role such as having a merchant way away from where you entered the dungeon or getting crammed into a hallway with tougher enemies which makes dodging way more difficult.)

It's fun if you like this type of challenge but it can also be highly frustrating at times as even a small mistake can screw you over pretty badly though you'll feel pretty good once you conquer a floor and gradually begin to overcome challenges deeper down in the dungeon.
(The bosses in particular can be real dicks at times and there's some variety for every floor so you usually have one you find a bit more comfortable dealing with and one that you'll just hate due to it's movement or attack pattern and so on.)

Personally I enjoy the game although in shorter bursts usually, I've been down pretty deep now and nearly at the ending areas of the game but it does get very tiring dying over and over again too as it feels like you're making no progress at times.
(Binding of Isaac is a great example of this, it takes a lot of practice to get down to the later floors and the boss and enemy variety usually means no two runs end up the same plus of course what equipment you come across and once you finally do beat the game it might only be the beginning of a even tougher challenge as you unlock more endings and playable characters.)

Played this and Kill to Collect for a bit earlier today.
Really enjoying both of them.

For some reason it wasn't that fun to just play the isodemos of them. So i will wait for some nice deals for them and them get them. Very Happy

Enter the Gungeon sells 200k copies in a week
Quote:
Roguelike shmup Enter the Gungeon has shifted 200k copies in its first week on sale, developer Dodge Roll has announced.

That's pretty good for a game made by a five-person studio. The game costs £10.99 / $14.99 on Steam and PS4, so that means it grossed upwards of $3m. Of course one needs to factor in Steam and Sony's 30 per cent cut, and publisher Devolver Digital is also entitled to something, so based on my cowboy math estimate you'd wind up making somewhere not too far south of $2m. Split across five people. In a week.

$15 * 200.000 = $3.000.000
30% steam + 30% sony + 10% devolver (estimate) = 70%
$3.000.000 * 0.7 = $2.100.000 => $900.000 / 5 = $180.000 per person

Let's say they worked for 2 years on this title => $90.000 per year and you have to account for all the costs for hardware, maybe rent etc etc...

It's good money, but it's not huuuuge Very Happy
