So one of my external hds is messed up for some reason - says it has unallocated space when its supposed to be full.
I wanna save the files and repair the hd - but all I can find are shitty free programs which let me scan but not repair. (one took 5h only to tell me that I need to pay if i wanna repair).

So, what programs do you suggest? I can ofcourse buy one - but there are so many and quite few of them are expensive as hell. I dont wanna buy the first one I find Sad

I can't recommend a program as I know little about these backup and recovery tools and the free ones are often pretty basic from how I understood it but what I would do is check S.M.A.R.T status via a utility that can do that (Piriform Defraggler has a function for that for example but there are dedicated software that is more thorough.) and see what the damage report is. Smile
(If it's something like sector failures those might be worked around by re-formating the drive but it's a sign the drive itself is starting to fail so it's a temporary fix at best, if SMART reports any damage at all though, doesn't have to be a physical error I guess but chances are it is something like that.)

TESTDISK. SKIP ALL THE OTHER CRAP. TESTDISK! Saved data which you would've thought to be absolutely destroyed or gone!

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
Quote:
TestDisk is powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software: certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.

TestDisk can

Fix partition table, recover deleted partition
Recover FAT32 boot sector from its backup
Rebuild FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 boot sector
Fix FAT tables
Rebuild NTFS boot sector
Recover NTFS boot sector from its backup
Fix MFT using MFT mirror
Locate ext2/ext3/ext4 Backup SuperBlock
Undelete files from FAT, exFAT, NTFS and ext2 filesystem
Copy files from deleted FAT, exFAT, NTFS and ext2/ext3/ext4 partitions.
TestDisk has features for both novices and experts. For those who know little or nothing about data recovery techniques, TestDisk can be used to collect detailed information about a non-booting drive which can then be sent to a tech for further analysis. Those more familiar with such procedures should find TestDisk a handy tool in performing onsite recovery.

Operating systems
TestDisk can run under

DOS (either real or in a Windows 9x DOS-box),
Windows (NT4, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008, Windows 7 (x86 & x64),
Linux,
FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD,
SunOS and
MacOS X

But don't use it to test, just go to your partition and copy away all readable files first Smile

Isn't there a manual option where you can specify what type of disk you have and then browse the files? I'm sadly no expert but til now it always was able to find all files even if the partition data was damaged.
