If it's just for Chrome, I use ZenMate - works brilliantly with Netflix and other web-based stuff.

Two years ago I used Hide My Ass to watch F1 and such. 5$ wasn't too bad (seems their price went up).

Last year I used the Smart DNS from OverPlay, was quite pleased with their support. They had a great list of servers, was nice to have a Belgian one at my disposal. They also offer VPN.

Hmm I tried that one (PIA). I regard it as malware now.
If the client gets started it creates 2 processes called piamanager.exe.
One of those (or both) spawn 2 other processes called rubyw.exe (Google it).
Those I noticed will start parsing your HDD, really for a VPN client?
Both piamanger.exe processes will be replaced with a pia_tray.exe process.
When connected I noticed some times that the VPN client started to access my HDD again.
Did not investigate that thoroughly but it seems the client was writing stuff to my HDD.
=> uninstall

I've always used SoftEther VPN. Free of charge, fast, open-source, tons of countries to choose from.

lol, utter nonsense.

Been using PIA for over a year now, albeit not through their client, but I have it set in my router Wink and have it set to route certain machines (via IP Tables) to VPN, others not. So 2 x media systems through Netherlands server (UK here so we need that lol), 1 system routed to a USA server for 'other' purposes Wink, and my main system on normal, but can switch to whatever server I want at the flick of a switch.

PIA is brilliant, fast, and damn cheap to boot Smile

Best one there is, in my opinion.

Just bought this one too for one year after some researching.

Very satisfied so far. Ping nearly doubled, but that was expected.
Bandwith itself is like without VPN: 100 MBit Download.

The only problem i have is with some Notebooks that are connected to another router over WLAN.
Without VPN they reach about 100 MBit too over WLAN. With VPN it's only 4 MBit. Shocked
I use their application for connecting.
Have to do some research for this problem, meh.

PIA is what I use, its pretty good. One thing to note though...

Best having it set up at router level, rather than using a VPN app, if your router supports it. I'm using Merlin's FW on my RT-AC68U with policy based routing.

However...

No router to date has given better then 60 mb/s on a VPN, regardless if your ISP connection is 1000 mb/s. Normal behaviour, due to most routers being very CPU limited, so the expected speeds will be in the range of 10 mb/s in reality.

Dual core CPU routers will give you better performance, but were a long way from seeing routers with anything faster, yet.

Setting up 'pfsence' on a computer would be the way to go, if you require full speed from the VPN, but that is a minefield in itself, and not for the faint hearted Smile

Yep i tried to set up it directly on the router. But as you said, performance was bad.
So i'm using OpenVPN with PIAs configs now on several PCs.

What i noticed though after a few weeks of being a customer:
Many websites started to spam me with that Cloudflare crap if i used Germany location. Changed to Netherlands and there it started to some weeks later. Currently using the UK one, and seems good so far. Bandwith is only about 70-80% there, compared to Germany.

Don't know if i will subscribe again to them after that Cloudflare shit, which went on for a few months for me.

Dunno about Cloudflare as I never do much web browsing on VPN?, apart from the odd use for buying games that require the Mexico/Brazil/Russia lark Very Happy

My main use is for my Shield media box, to circumvent Geo locks here in UK, for which PIA does its job rather nicely Smile

Plenty enough bandwidth for streaming, and I alternate between Swiss & Netherlands servers, which I find the fastest for that purpose.

Netflix is clamping down on Geo unlocks. PIA is one of the first to suffer, as they are now not Geo-unlocking if a particular Site/add-on has blacklisted that VPN's IP and/or DNS.

More will follow, for sure.
