“The process of delving into the black abyss is to me the keenest form of fascination.” ~H. P. Lovecraft
Rock Pocket Games announced today that their new H.P. Lovecraft inspired Martian tale Moons of Madness will be released in 2018. Moons of Madness is a first person, psychological horror game that explores the internal struggles of astronaut Shane Newehart and the supernatural events that occur on research station Trailblazer Alpha, the first scientific outpost on the planet Mars.
In Moons of Madness, Rock Pocket Games integrates the cosmicism style found in H.P. Lovecraft’s hallmark to the game’s narrative, environment and gameplay; the sense that ordinary life is a thin shell over a reality that is so alien and abstract in comparison that merely contemplating it would damage the sanity of the ordinary person.
To render this lyrical experience on screen, Moons of Madness rely on three main core mechanics:
- Combining hard science, based on meticulous analysis of NASA and Space X research, with Lovecraftian horror
- An innovative feature called “Zone Outs” that simulates Lovecraftian madness. Players are exposed to hallucinations and visions they play through as part of the game. They have to understand what the visions are expressing as they foreshadow certain events mapping out the character’s history
- Exploring mental illness through various game modes without antagonizing the medical condition itself

The tone and aesthetics seem good indeed, but...please be more than a simple walking simulator please be more than a simple walking simulatorplease be more than a simple walking simulatorplease be more than a simple walking simulator
(Even a 70% walking simulator - 30% adventure/action hybrid would suffice at this point, as long as it's not a press-W-to-win gamovie all is well )
No VR seems like a waste for a game like this.. after playing horror in VR i got spoiled, its just so much more immersive, i was surprised that it for once actually felt quite scary and intense at times. Horror games can otherwise be such a bore, yes they can be atmospheric, but usually not very scary.
great game, a combination of soma and firewatch. each year a bunch of this type of game release but only a few stand out.
tried playing the beast inside before this and after 1h i gave up, felt very unpolished and voice acting was bad, if you dont have the budget for proper voice acting then cut it completely. moons of madness on the other hand felt like aaa in comparison
Funny, I installed it today and I'm quite impressed. Took a break when I died. I spent an hour trying out "The Story of Henry Bishop" yesterday but it wasn't even close as far as polish, writing and enjoyment is concerned so I uninstalled it and decided to give this one a shot and it's a keeper (I died and decided to take a break).
