 |
So my father ordered a new car, ordered extra ~200eur for mirror link and usb ports bla bla..
So the car shows up, we get it and start to set it up, I connect his old Z2 to the car's USB
and fire up the Mirror Link, the Navi and his Phone handshake, the Mirror Link works as advertised:
I am seeing the phone screen on the Navi, you can scroll around, use apps - it's perfect!
So we fire up Google Maps through the link, and after some poking the link breaks - it turns out,
that if you scroll too fast, probably the phone can't keep up with the connection and it fails.
OK - no fast scrolling. So we set a destination, start the car and on we go...
..BUT OF COURSE the moment we start moving the link breaks with a nice message:
Can't use Mirror Link when vehicle is not stationary! Check certificates..blabla
WHAT THE FUCK?! Isn't that the WHOLE FUCKING IDEA?!
So I get the laptop from the backseat, do a little googling, and apparently, there are 2
certificates for apps, in order to run through Mirror Link:
1. free - you must have this for your app to work while stationary
2. paid - you must have this for your app to work while moving
apparently 99% of apps in the App Store don't have the 2-nd one. Even Google Maps,
which shows up in the list of certified apps..
so I say fuck Mirror Link, and open the App Store on the Z2 to look for Android Auto,
but apparently Android Auto requires Android 5.0, and even if the Z2 is running 5.0 it's still
too old to run Android Auto.
Ok, I get my S5, open the App Store and still can't find Android Auto, I'm like WTF?
So I open Chrome on my S5, browse to the app and open the Store from there..
and guess what..
"This app is not available in your country."
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!?!?!?

tl;dr: Android Auto & Mirror Link are useless for 90% of the world

Android Auto != MirrorLink. You're mixing up two very different things.
Android Auto is the equivalent of Apple CarPlay. Both require apps to have a special "Auto" view, in which not only are they limited in what they can let the user do, they're also limited in how shit gets displayed. You have to build a car-specific interface with a subset of UI elements.
You will not get YouTube or whatever via AA/CP.
MirrorLink in turn is locked, always. That has nothing to do with the apps or anything, that's a core restriction of how ML is implemented in cars. You can't use it while moving for safety reasons.
However, there's a way around it. Search for "handbrake bypass" - it's not always implemented via the handbrake (the geolocation is another method), but generally the unlock methods are still called that because the earliest implementations would lock it unless the handbrake was engaged. In those cases you can simply short circuit the handbrake wire
