Old means before 1980 for that matter. I'm looking for personal choices over imdb ratings.
Please post suggestions.

Vechter is the guy to ask... very knowledgeable and is quite good at describing the movies.
+ You'll end up with a few less popular titles.
I'm too lazy atm to check my watched list and well I'd only list movies... so not really helpful. Maybe tomorrow or the weekend if you haven't gotten much by then.

I'm assuming you've already seen everything from Kubrick, Fellini, or Sergio Leone..if not, that's where you have to start
There are many (perhaps obvious, but still!) classics that I would recommend, like The Sting, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Apartment, Midnight Cowboy, Lawrence of Arabia, Patton, The Conversation, The French Connection, The Deer Hunter..and so on.
(I'm quite ignorant when it comes to the really old movies though - like the pre-50s ones for instance*, I'll make up for it one day but laziness is a bad beast xD)
*except for Charlie Chaplin's ones, those are masterpieces

Please post suggestions. | Do you have to go that far back to miss some great movies? The 80s and 90s had some great years delivering on entertaining action movies, even though they were not aiming for any artistic value, they defined an era and a feel for action movies, that seems to be absolutely lost. Simple movies like Break Down, Die Hard, Falling Down and many more were produced with a simple premise, yet managed to capture the viewer like nothing else. Today's block buster action movies are all about saving the world, the biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig huge action shots, lots of shit going down, yet all the intensity and grittiness just isn't present.
Before the 80's you had just a totally different sort of cinema and I'd say that ixi is here spot on, you must not miss Fellini and especially Sergio Leone (you might wanna add Hitchcock depending on your taste), but I guess you already know a lot of these.
The reason why I'm bringing this topic up is, that when I talk with you, I don't get the impression that you've already seen all the good stuff that has been released after the 80's, so why are you that specific that they had to be released before the 80's?
And just one recommendation if you simply want something to watch from pre 80's:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057012/combined (you had to click to see what this was? Maybe you should go ahead and look at my sig to get the NFOrce Imdb experience )

I agree witht this but do be careful though as he seems to be in the process of becoming an artsy fartsy |
It's already happened.
I'll suggest using a timeline:
1979-1970: (I'll include the year 1980 aswell tho)
1. The Elephant Man
2. Stalker
3. Spirit of the Beehive
4. Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (Fassbinder is a great director, he's german so you might enjoy his movies even more, there's also The Marriage of Maria Braun and Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant which are also good)
5. A Woman Under the Influence
6. Kagemusha
7. Aguirre, Wrath of God
8. Suspiria
9. The Conformist
(there's also the more obvious choices such as: Taxi Driver, A Clockwork Orange, The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull, Barry Lyndon, Godfather, Apocalypse Now, One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest)
1969-1960:
1. The Battle of Algiers
2. Harakiri (most movies by Kobayashi are amazing - I can also HIGHLY recommend The Human Condition Trilogy, Samurai Rebellion, Kwaidan)
3. High and Low
4. Persona (again, most movies by Bergman are amazing - but I could be saying this about most of the directors here )
5. Woman in the Dunes
6. The Army of Shadows (also Le Samourai and a few more by Melville, who made a few movies regarding the french resistance ~ fun fact: he was a member)
7. The Hole
8. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
9. 8½
10. Viridiana
(and the more known/obvious choices: The Great Escape, Dollars Trilogy {For a few Dollars more etc}, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Cool Hand Luke, Once Upon a time in the West, Psycho)
1959-1950:
1. The Seventh Seal (Bergman again)
2. Sunset Blvd.
3. The Wages of Fear
4. Sansho the Bailiff
5. The 400 Blows
6. Tokyo Story
7. Rashomon, La Strada, Los Olvidados, Night of the Hunter, Les Diaboliques
(Rear Window, Vertigo, Seven Samurai, Paths of Glory, 12 Angry Men, Touch of Evil, On the Waterfront, Witness for the Prosecution)
1949-1940:
1. Bicycle Thieves
2. The Third Man
3. Day of Wrath
4. The Red Shoes
5. Children of Paradise
6. The Ox-bow Incident
(lots of obvious picks here: It's A Wonderful Life, Treasure of Sierra Madre, Grapes of Wrath, Citizen Kane {I personally think it's overrated, but still good}, Double Indemnity, The Great Dictator, The Maltese Falcon, Rope)
1939-1930:
1. Vampyr
2. M
3. La Grande Illusion
4. All Quiet on the Western Front
5. Rules of the Game
6. Duck Soup
7. L'Atalante
(Modern Times, City Lights, Mr. Smith goes to Washington, Stagecoach)
Before 1930 there aren't many great movies, but I'll try to post a few: Battleship Potemkin, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Der Golem, The Phantom Carriage, Dr. Mabuse: The Gambler, Metropolis, The General, Nosferatu.
If you want less known movies let me know.
