Every day in the world of Refactor thousands of puzzle pieces are created for the explicit purpose of playing “The Game”. Requiring perfection, only perfect puzzle pieces are selected for use and those who are imperfect are shunned by society and decommissioned. Thrown into this hostile environment, it is up to a couple of misfits to find their place in this unbending society.
Refactor is a physics-based platformer taking elements from classic Metroidvanias. Placed in a world that is a puzzle itself, you can literally turn the world upside down by rearranging the map and building your own pathways through the game. Uncover secrets, acquire new abilities and upgrades, and discover where you fit in the world.
Taking elements from classic metroidvanias such as Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Refactor blends them with the falling block puzzle genre to create an entirely unique physics-based puzzle platforming experience.
The standard formula of a metroidvania is based off of the concept of an open world with gated progression. In Refactor you play as a tetromino, a four-block shape popularized by Tetris, with each of the shapes being tied to abilities that change the way you traverse and interact with the world.
For example, the square shape can be used to combat enemies or the line shape to leap great distances. These shapes can be further augmented by special abilities found throughout the world. While these powers are fairly standard for the metroidvania genre, we’ve turned it up a notch and have given you the ability to rearrange the map in a puzzle-like manner.
Set in a world that is a puzzle itself, you can literally turn the world upside down by rearranging the map. The rooms that make up the map can be reordered, moved around and even rotated, all in real time. It is up to you to construct new pathways to previously inaccessible areas, to solve mind-bending puzzles, and to uncover secrets in the world of Refactor.

New shapes can be collected throughout the world that allow the main character to transform. Each shape has its own powers and benefits. For example, the square can slam down on enemies and other destructables while the line shape can perform a spring jump maneuver. There are four tetromino shapes to find and every shape can be dynamically chained together in order to traverse the world and combat enemies.
Augmentations are triggered powers that alter a characteristic of the shape you are in or give you specific properties that allow you to interact with the world in new and unique ways. Ranking up augmentations increases the effectiveness or range or adds additional properties to them. An example of an augmentation is the Electrical Augment; when triggered it electrifies the character giving the slam ability a super charge that can stun enemies and jump-start generators.
The world of Tetropolis is built up of tetromino-shaped rooms with doors in strategic places. These doors will remain closed unless connected to the next room through another doorway. Accessing a control point for the given level will grant you the ability rotate and move these rooms around the map, connecting these doors and creating new paths. As you reorient these rooms, you are actually doing so in-game and in real time. Zooming in will allow you to watch objects in the rooms react to their new orientation as well as see if areas that were previously impassable may now be traversed. Room reorientation may be used not only to create paths but to solve large scale puzzles based on the positions and contents of these rooms.
