In what might be the biggest buy out of the Cannes Film Festival, STX has snapped up the international rights for Martin Scorsese‘s long brewing “The Irishman” for somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 million. Damn. Paramount, which put the project in turnaround, retains domestic rights, but make no mistake, this is a big power move by STX. It’s a deal that allows the company to get in the mix in the lucrative international box office, which is now more vital to studio revenues than ever.
Fabrica de Cine is set to fully finance the movie that is expected to star Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, and Harvey Keitel in the Steve Zaillian (“Gangs Of New York,” “Schindler’s List,” “Moneyball“)-penned adaptation of “I Heard You Paint Houses” by Charles Brandt. It tells the true story of Frank Sheeran, a WWII veteran who led a colorful life as a high-ranking officer in the International Brotherhood of Teamsters while also dabbling in organized crime as a highly-sought-after hitman, with rumored ties to the deaths of President Kennedy and Jimmy Hoffa.

De Niro's been whoring himself out in those shitty comedies for over a decade now, would be good to see him in a proper movie again.
First thing that I thought when reading that cast was Jumanji's what year is it?! (intended as the most positive reaction) - even though I'm aware that replicating the good ol' classic formula after all this time isn't exactly an easy task. Still, I want to believe!
One of the biggest deals at the Cannes Film Festival this year was fledging studio STX ponying up a staggering $50 million for the international rights to Martin Scorsese‘s “The Irishman.” It’s a figure that matches the huge expectations that are greeting the movie, before a frame has been shot, that will see Scorsese potentially work with a cast including Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, and Harvey Keitel. However, it appears one of those names need a bit more convincing.
According to THR, Joe Pesci has reportedly turned down Scorsese’s offer for a role in the movie. Pesci has pretty much hung up his hat from acting, and hasn’t appeared in a film since 2010’s “Love Ranch,” directed by Taylor Hackford. And Scorsese isn’t the only offer that has come knocking on Pesci’s door.
Last month Louis C.K. revealed he approached Pesci for “Horace and Pete,” and not only did he turn him down, but offered some stinging criticism (“I watched your stand-up, which I can tell you’re just trying, and you’re no good at it…quit that now”).
Can “The Irishamn” be made without Pesci? Definitely, but you have to bet that part of the reason STX plunked down $50 million was allure of having the movie that would bring back the trio behind “Goodfellas,” “Casino,” and “Raging Bull.” Not to mention it makes marketing a slam dunk as well.
All that said, Scorsese is still hoping to twist Pesci’s arm and get him to appear in the movie, and if anybody can convince the actor to get in front of the camera again, it’s likely to be his old friend. For now, listen to Louis C.K. recount his meeting with Joe Pesci.

After saying no dozens of times, Joe Pesci has come out of retirement and has officially joined the cast of Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman”.
Robert De Niro is set and Al Pacino’s deal to star is currently being finalized, while Harvey Keitel and Bobby Cannavale are also in talks for the project.
DeNiro plays Frank ‘The Irishman’ Sheeran, a mob hitman whose illustrious career is today best known for a supposed involvement in the death of Jimmy Hoffa. Steve Zaillian adapted the screenplay from Charles Brandt’s book “I Heard You Paint Houses”.
Pesci will portray Russell Bufalino, a Mafia boss out of Pennsylvania who has long been suspected of having a hand in the disappearance of Hoffa.
The project marks the first time that Pacino and Scorsese have worked together, the fourth time Pesci and Scorsese have worked together, the fourth time Pacino and De Niro have worked together, and the seventh time De Niro and Pesci have worked together.

The film is being financed by Netflix, and indeed the streaming exhibition is less-than-ideal for cinephiles, but The Irishman is expected to get a small theatrical release to qualify for the Oscars. It’s unclear if the movie will hit theaters in 2018 or 2019, but Scorsese does tend to take his time in the editing room so a 2018 release isn’t guaranteed.

Scorsese will be using cutting-edge technology to de-age his actors so they can portray their characters in various time periods, much like the way Marvel’s done with Michael Douglas and Robert Downey Jr. They went through various rounds of tests and Scorsese seems to have been pleased with the results, so this should be an interesting one.
Looks surprisingly good. I was sceptical considering the main cast is up there in age and they have to represent 40 to 65 year old men, but from the little de-aging tech shown I'll be okay if it' looks like this for the entirety of the movie. Hopefully we get one last hurrah from these old farts, I'm huge fan of all of them down to some actors from the supporting cast.
Looks good but feels... wrong? They were/are great actors, but maybe it's time to let them go? It's not like good actors stopped coming along (although it's more and more harder to make a profit with actor driven movies nowadays) after their time.
How long until they just say fuck it and start using this de-aging shit all over, or start having corpses on screen like peter cushing in rogue one

Looks good even I was very sceptical about these guys doing that another movie of them being mafia guys. Anyways it's refreshing to see something like this in the middle of CGI-botox-latex super hero nonsense era.
If only I could afford a bigger TV and the rest of my 5.1.4 Atmos speakers including the subwoofer for this.

Who's gonna stream and 3 and a half hour movie?!
It better be good, and the deaging better be fixed cause 3.5 hours of sitting on a couch, with various distractions... This will be a really difficult sell.
Heck I adored endgame and haven't seen it the second time cause of its length. In theatre its fine, you set time aside for that. But lazing on a couch for 3.5 hours. It's different than binging a series. You can put it down for a moment and relax and then continue. Scorsese doesn't do light movies, they're often heavy and require attentive attention. Gonna be a while before I personally watch this. was hoping for 2.5 max - a good evening length. Start at 8, 1030 go to sleep.
