It's that time of year again, where we step into a new world of wonder, wire and whatthefucksthat?
My personal interest is the VR headsets - rumour has it we'll get the price for the OR, and possibly the VIVE too - I absolutely NEED to know, cos I need to start robbing old women, stealing phones... you know the drill...
Lots of robots, kitchen gadge, and drones. There's even a Federal Drone Booth where lucky US citizens can sign their freedom away after buying a drone...
What you lot looking forward to this year? Sadly, I see nothing about VR/Robot sexytime tech...

samsung will show off their new controllers for gearvr
http://vrfocus.com/archives/27260/samsung-to-reveal-rink-gear-vr-motion-controller-at-ces-2016/
htc/valve will show off some unannounced "huge technilogical breakthrough" for their vive headset
i'm guessing it's room 3d capture
oculus probably has some games on display and the newer iteration of their touch controller
probably hyping their Q1 launch - which i consider a joke without proper controllers

So is the VR fad going the way of the 3d fad already? What's next?

*sad sigh*
No.. unfortunately its clever marketing.
The VR experience on capable machines will undoubtedly be astonishing. It doesn't matter how much people naysay VR, it isn't like 3DTV - 3D was limited, clunky and not particularly good.
VR (done right) will be very immersive, hopefully pretty plug'n'play, and by now (I hope) will be less of an issue for the motion sensitive (this will obviously improve, but I hope that the hardware is at a point where it isn't as much of an issue as it was for DK2).
However, as you rightly point out, immersion is not a lot without some good tactile input. Games like Elite Dangerous and ETS2 will be stonkingly good without extra hardware, but, for the titles being released for VR specifically, you're gonna need hands.
So they'll sell them separately, because you need them.
And, they'll figure, that those who can afford the VR set in the first place have a better chance of buying the controllers, so they won't be afraid to charge inflated prices because of that. And you can bet your pubic hair that the API, maybe even the drivers or the plug itself, will be totally proprietary, so we won't be seeing cheap alternatives for a while; look at TrackIR for reference.
Still, I want one. I don't really need the controllers personally, at least for a while. But I think I can assure that this won't be another 'fad'. It's a hugely important step in total immersion, not to mention the practical uses for seeing virtual worlds in full 360° 3D - education and engineering will be very happy with this (imagine walking around the latest Intel CPU!)
I just hope the fuck they don't price the average consumer out of the market. Which is why I want to know the prices for both units, and I want to know if they will be compatible with any game that supports VR, and not do a Nvidia/AMD (lock each other out of any compatibility), as that would be even worse. Of course, if we start dseeing licensed API's, it's very likely that might be the case, which is utterly sad.

Posted: Tue, 5th Jan 2016 16:44 Post subject: CES 2016: HTC Vive virtual reality headset gets upgraded |
|
 |
Quote: | Taiwanese tech firm HTC has revealed changes to its forthcoming virtual reality headset at the CES tech show.
The Vive's release was delayed after what chief executive Cher Wang described as a "very, very big technological breakthrough".
This has been revealed to be a camera system that allows the wearer to see objects in the physical room around them, helping to avoid collisions.
Some have questioned whether the device will be affordable, though.
By pressing a button on a handheld controller, the user can see objects near them ghosted in to the virtual reality environment.
This merging of physical and digital is intended as a safety feature - and a solution to one of the practical problems facing VR.
HTC plans to launch the Vive in April.
Pre-orders for a rival PC-powered headset, the Rift by Oculus, are set to begin on Wednesday. However, the Facebook-owned firm has yet to reveal when they will be delivered.
The other major headset on show at the Vegas event is the PlayStation VR, which works with Sony's games console.
"For too long, the promise of virtual reality has been little more than a promise," said Ms Wang.
"Today we stand on the precipice of a new era. Vive is creating a world where the only limit is human imagination."
The headset's improvements over a version revealed in February include:
A front-facing camera, so the user can view the world around them when desired
A redesign of the headset and strap to make them more comfortable
Interchangeable foam inserts and "nose gaskets" to better fit the shape of the wearer's face
A brighter display with better clarity than before
Handheld controllers feature a range of updates including textured buttons, grip pads and softer edges
HTC would not reveal any details on pricing, but when pushed it acknowledged the cost might prove a barrier to mass-market adoption. |

@Frant
Ahh, I remember throwing the cooler that came with my K6, AMD64 and Phenom II straight in the garbage can and getting something better.
