https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1598272670/chip-the-worlds-first-9-computer

Quote:
Is $35 Raspberry Pi a lot to spend for a PC? Here’s something that might interest you. CHIP is the new miniature $9 PC that has almost the same functions and power as a regular computer. This little powerhouse machine is created by a US startup Next Thing Co.

Yes, CHIP is a real $9 computer. It houses a 1GHz processor, 4GB onboard storage and 512MB DDR3 RAM. This isn’t enough? Here’s a lot more to this story. CHIP comes with inbuilt Bluetooth to connect the devices and WiFi for network connections.

CHIP is powerful enough to run all kinds of software and runs mainline Linux. Chip comes with a completely integrated battery power circuit so that you don’t need external power. All you have to do is attach a 3.7V battery to CHIP and you are good to go.

“The goal for Chip is to give anyone who wants a $9 computer access to one [and] to make building things with computers as easy and accessible as possible,” said Dave Rauchwerk from Next Thing Co. He added, “It’s really powerful, it’s really tiny, but the other thing that we’re really excited about is that it’s completely open source.”

Absolutely insane. I can't find a clarification on whether this is a single or multicore A13, but seriously... for nine DOLLARS? Completely blown away. This could easily be the dirt cheap basis of a media centre, an emulation station or even a low-power PC.

SERIOUSLY!

There's no way you could lose out at $9, especially if you're a hacker or hobbyist. Oh and the Allwinner A13 with the Mali400 is a singlecore proc, which is a "shame" as it would have been the perfect Pi2 competitor. Still, for $9 you've already got a lot of options with this Very Happy

... like me, haha, but that's okay.. I'll see how it goes with the KS and probably snag a retail C.H.I.P sometime next year. Seems like the perfect base for a mini MAME cab based around an Ion iCade \o/ Perfect gift material for my arcade-lovin' brother Very Happy

@Ankh

I'm not sure about MAME, maybe one of the older MAME Reloaded 0.39 builds? As for Amiga should be okay, it runs fairly well (going by most reports) on the old Xperia Play which is roughly the same class of hardware performance.

Faster than the Pi1, looks to be quite a bit slower than the Pi2 in applications that support/utilise multithreading. Overall the Pi2 is by far the better choice, but it works out slightly more costly for it.

... but only slightly grinhurt

$9 seems to be absolutely amazing! But it only mentions the battery. So any other power source is not usable? And how long does it operate on battery power only?

I have a Pi2 and it's still in the original packaging. Tell me what to do guys, I love this shit but somehow I lack creativity in this department. My mother in law wants to buy a new tv (old one just died on here some weeks ago) and I strongly advised against a "smart tv" because 1.) All the "smart" stuff are just slapped on and very limiting services 2.) They are ~20% more expensive. I'd rather set her up the pi2 and send it to her, so that she can use the tv as pc and browser the pad properly with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard.

You can easily use a small adaptor/transformator that delivers the same thing as the battery so that's not really a problem.

I can see connecting four of these together and suddenly we have 4 cores, 2GB of DDR3, 16GB storage and so on.. For $27 Very Happy

Depending on what someone is going to use it for it wouldn't be too hard to delegate specific functions to each CHIP... One or two for Sound/Multimedia, one for control (the "OS" that handles a custom interrupt system, requires a little ARM-C programming) and the fourth for whatever else that is needed (networking etc.)

Amiga 500 definitely. But not AGA.

Definitely! £28/$35 for the Pi2 and you'd need a few extras, such as SD card and wifi/BT dongles if you need connectivity, but either way.. it's far more powerful than this CHIP.

That's pretty much what I did with our TV, which is a "Smart TV" but is a bit naff really, so I got an Android stick (an MK908ii) and it's really good, far better than the TV and better than a Pi2 as well. 2GB RAM, quad-core 1.7Ghz and a built in Mali400. It's great Smile

Aye, no doubt! The old UAE4all was only A500-based anyhow, it was only recently updated to support AGA/1200 and I have no doubt that would be far beyond the capabilities of an Xperia Play, or this C.H.I.P.

Yeah, that mongoloid Pi 2 doesn't have integrated BT or WiFi ....

Just put them in and have it cost 40$ you mongoloids, what ... I'm supposed to put USB a BT dongle for the wireless peripherals and another for a WiFi adapter and shit like that? Not to mention that I don't trust any Linux system to work with any random device out of the box. Plug'n'Pray.

And let's not get started on the naming confusion...

I may back this project up, I'll check the postage to my country later, they probably make more profit than the asking price, like some ebayer scum.

Yup, the Pi2 is getting a lot of good feedback right now and the perf jump from Pi1 to this is supposedly fantastic - especially for emulation, going from a weak single core to a stronger quad is proving very effective.

A power plug, a HDMI cable, keyboard/mouse and an SD card. If you just want it for emulation, then RetroPie is everything you need - it's a fully built distro you flash to the SD card (yes, flash, not copy/paste.. the bootloader and all that) and has emulators built in and preconfigured to run. You'd also need a controller (can use the GPIO pins to wire up your own, or use USB controllers) and maybe a USB HDD for larger storage.

Aye, sir, this is Android.. not Apple ^_^ As for whether it has the power/etc, I'd guess so.. it is a 1.7Ghz quad. I'll try it for you and find out.

~edit~

Just tested it, works fine on Film... uh.. thatfilmsite via Android 4.4 and Chrome Wink Lots of ads and stuff slowing the page down though, so look into adblock or similar apps for Android.
