|
 |
From the studio that brought back SS1 & 2 to digital platforms.
http://www.fastcompany.com/3053050/app-economy/how-one-company-is-bringing-old-video-games-back-from-the-dead
Quote: | During our conversation, I ask Kick if he ever sees himself tiring of this line of work. After all, he entered the games industry as an artist, but now spends most of his days managing staff and talking with rights holders. He responds by noting that every day is different, and insists he’s in it for the long haul.
Still, Night Dive’s business is starting to change. With most of its current catalog, Night Dive merely licenses the rights for a rerelease, and splits the sales revenue with the rights holder. Night Dive is becoming more interested in acquiring rights in their entirety, as this gives the company much more flexibility.
One example: Night Dive is developing a full remake of the original System Shock, going well beyond the basic rerelease that launched a couple months ago. Night Dive has acquired the full rights to the franchise, and Kick says he’s been working with Robert Waters, the game's original concept artist, to reimagine his designs from the early 1990s.
"Seeing the difference between his artistic abilities back then compared to now, and his ablity to reinterpret those ideas, it's just been really exciting for us," Kick says.
Part of the plan for this remake also includes a console version, which would be a first for Night Dive. Kuperman believes much of the company's future growth will come from creating console adaptations for more PC games, along with some ports for mobile devices.
We may even see a System Shock 3 someday, though Night Dive would need a larger publisher to take on the task. Kuperman says the company is "having some conversations" on this front. "To really do another game in that series is going to take resources and time and commitment that we don't have, and it's really not our core business," Kuperman says. (Until now, 2K Games’ Bioshock series has stood in as a spiritual successor.) |

Dude, these mofos got the rights to Strife and hired the author of a source port and released an improved version of that.
And they are doing the same with Turok, mofo
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Dive_Studios |
A small update on Turok, there's a bit about it here: http://shaneplays.com/fragments-of-silicon-night-dive-studios-classic-games/
Quote: | Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (1997, first game in series) coming out. Night Dive took elements from PC and N64 versions to create “definitive” version. For example, they used the better soundtrack. Turok was one of the first 3D accelerated games Stephen played. The fog remains. You can’t have Turok without the fog! Turok 1 out around holiday, Turok 2 soon after that. Different engines plus Turok 2 has multiplayer. Night Dive has been working on Turok about 4-5 months (in addition to a dev working on it before that as a personal project). Not ready to announce price yet. |
Oh and from the same link SS1 on gog is doing "really well" saleswise.

I sincerely hope they won't attempt to develop System Shock 3 themselves when/if they decide to use their license. That should be handed to a much more experienced and skilled team. Ken Levine already wrote a game design draft that he presented to EA before Bioshock was in the works (Bioshock was basically the result of EA turning down the idea of a System Shock sequel and letting the franchise die) but EA wasn't interested in a new System Shock game.
If System Shock 3 becomes a viable option I hope Levine is involved as the game designer (designer of System Shock 2) with a veritable team of developers.
As for a remake of System Shock 1, go ahead. If nothing else it will bring the franchise into the mind of people that have never heard of SS1 and SS2.

If not for the gamers then at least for the games themselves. |
If they truly are dedicated and do it for the gamers, they should take a risk and create their own idea inspired by SS for example. |
How would that prove they "do it for the gamers" to you?

They took a risk when they (the founder more correctly) put all their money in to revive SS2.
Quote: | Kick didn’t have money on hand to buy the rights, so he scraped together contract work with independent developers and funneled the proceeds into the project. "Looking back on it now, there shouldn’t have been any doubt in my head that this would have been successful, but I literally put everything that I had left into it, and it was a little scary at first," Kick says. |
Happy now?

Why would I need to be happy and why would I need to be impressed because someone bought a known name with all his money? Try putting all your money in a new idea you believe in, inspired by a classic or not, that would be impressive.
I don't like this new revival trend, that is an opinion. I find nothing dedicated in it, it's a great business model as I said (if you can get the license for a reasonable price). Your agreement with my opinion is not really necessary.

Whats wrong? There were other PC developers throughout history that all of a sudden believed their money would come from console fanbase. Things worked out greatly for PC gamers. Deus Ex Invisible War, SupCom 2, Thief 3/4, Rainbow Six Lockdown, Crysis 2/3, FEAR 2/3, Commandos Strike Force, Dungeon Siege 3, Unreal Tournament 3, etc.
Great, solid games, which were greately enhanced after their makers turned from PC to consoles. Looking forward to more PC classics going the way of the playstation.

Actually no, none of those are companies that were created with the purpose of reviving old games, like Night Dive is. I mean not even close.
Of course the (a) game can suck for a myriad of reasons, so "we'll see" is right.

Also Night Dive Studios are looking to bring console exclusive games to PC as well.
Such as Condemned 2:
https://www.facebook.com/JaceHallShow/posts/10152999663109303?pnref=story
In response to this:
Quote: | Deep thought..and question...
I helped to create a video game console franchise called "Condemned." I currently own the entire franchise.
[...]
I am contemplating finding an interested and proven Indie development team AND PROVIDING IT TO THEM, so that they can take over the franchise and move it forward. |
Quote: | If you've got the source Night Dive Studios would love to publish the sequel for you. Integrate Steam's API, update the other bits and bobbles perhaps? |
Apparently they have expressed interest in The Darkness 1 as well, although I can't find the source.
Also from the link I posted before:
Quote: | They did manage to track down owner of Capcom catalog. Some rare games a lot of people aren’t aware of. |
These might be console games, but I'm not sure.

Please, no Ken Levine. I wouldn't want another promising System Shock game marred by poor and undeveloped script. And if Bioshock is really an indication where his SS3 was going towards, thank god EA turned him down.
Regarding the remake, any indication as to which engine will be used?

The idea has pro's and con's though:
Pro's: likely deliver a decent story, high production value and good chance of bringing in new fans to the game world.
Con's: Will just be an unreal engine linear corridor shooter with handful of minigames along the way like the bioshock series. Likely core fans will be disappointed with new streamlined cinematic viscarel 3000.
I kinda think half the reason we got outstanding games a decade and a half ago was becuase small studios took chances and broke molds innovating. If it was handed to 2k, gearbox etc it will be same shit different skins. I'm more excited by Indy kickstarters these days as they generally take chances all the AAA's cannot afford to do.

Haha yeah , I've always wanted to play them. Maybe they won't do it, but hearing those two names again in relation to something personal computer-y, makes me
This is even better than the original news itself, because while I love System Shock 1 (and its recent Enhanced version - pretty well done in my opinion), the word remake always makes me raise dem eyebrows. We could end up with something like this
Let's hope for the best

That looks pretty good and i definately will play it. Didn't try out the Enhanced Edition, as the gameplay and graphics are too archaic for my taste.
Though i hope, that they remove the vaseline in those preview shots from the remake.
