Apparently some time ago (might be months???) my harddisks power cord went into my CPU Fan and blocked it from spinning... Which I realized just now. After finishing Witcher 3, playing tons of project cars, Counter Strike and GTA V.

Never once did the computer shut down in all this time.

Did I just shorten the lifespan of my CPU? Crying or Very sad

No. If it was anything near damaging of your CPU it'd have shut itself off from overheating. The fact it still had a heatsink to go to and the normal airflow of your case is probably what kept it from doing that.

Overclocking your cpu is really what shortens it's life but by the time that'll ever actually happen, you'd have upgraded to a whole new system anyways.

na, dont think it happened long time ago. you wouldnt be able to play games with a non working cooler, the cpu would throttle within minutes -> massive fps drops. older cpu gens (like till 5 years ago) would have shutdown (if the value is set in the bios) or just burn to death.

and yes it might shorten the cpus life if its getting to long to hot, but the xeon throttle before that would happen (think they even do an emergency shut down IF they get too hot even with throttling)

60fps in witcher 3 all the time and there was no reason for this to happen just now, I haven't moved the PC case in months Neutral My PC now actually sounds different Laughing

@SpykeZ: Airflow is another thing... I guess my power supply has a fan and the gfx... I don't have any case fans Laughing

even with a decent and perfect airflow in the case the cpu cant be cooled that much to mentain uncritical temperatures within load (and w3 and pcars make good use of the xeon).

and moving the case must not be the only reason why a cable falls down

long story, short saiyajin: dont worry, if the cooler fails -> you will notice it fast Twisted Evil

So I am not the only one Very Happy
I was cleaning the cpu fan from dust and I thought "damn, that was effective it's quieter now." Didn't realize I somehow must have killed it. Oh well ... Smile

The Noctua fan I'm using stopped every now and then, turns out that the default settings for it in the bios and the effectiveness of the heatsink meant it didn't need to spin up until CPU load increased such as when gaming, adjusted the bios settings a bit so that it's always on now. Very Happy
(Some compressed air applied carefully every half a year or so to clean out residual dust buildup and everything's OK, main downside with air flowing into and out the case and especially as I have a dog so dust and small hairs do get through even with dust filters blocking a majority of it.)

Anyway if the heatsink is good then there shouldn't be any problems with the fan not running as long as you don't run the CPU through Furmark or something similar and as mentioned above most if not all modern CPU's also has guards against higher heat levels where I think it'll first clock itself down if required ("throttling") and if temps become critical it'll shut down to prevent any permanent damage so you should be OK but it's good you discovered and fixed the blockage with the cabling. Smile
(Different games stress the CPU differently or how to describe it best so eventually it might have shut down though I find it impressive that it held out in GTA V which I believe is pretty heavy on the CPU, Witcher 3 is more GPU though it makes the CPU work a bit too.)
