|
 |
... rare event, as I sold my phone (I wasn't using it!), and I have basically been told by the almost-wife to spend on myself...
I am thinking about replacing my aged AMD 8320, and naturally I'm considering something like the Intel i5 4960K + MB (DDR3, I don't really want to spend on memory), but then I consider the various games I'm playing and if the i5 is really worth the effort.
I could spend it on other things, but TBH, I'm fairly happy with the 970, I have pretty much most accessories I currently want, and the only other thing I would look at is extra storage.
Suggestions?

if you dont want to oc it get a xeon, i MIGHT perform better in games the next years if they support more than 4 cores. should last long, mine is two years old now and i do not even think about upgrading. you can use your ram again and 8gb is enough atm.

Get an used sandy bridge mobo+CPU combo, sure there's plenty of people selling them around.
Use left over cash for a Pascal GPU when the time comes.

thats true, used 2500k+z board is very cheap atm and will survive another 2-3 years with oc (or lets say wouldnt be noticable slower than same clocked skylake i5s)

I'd suggest to buy a steering wheel but you already got one, so my move would be..all-in* on the combo beast of a processor/motherboard, and you're set for some proper
* leave some for buying surprise flowers or romantic trickeries, that way you'll also activate the buttsex night bonus!!

I very very rarely get cash of this amount, and so waiting is probably not an option

Yes, but will I REALLY notice the difference in gaming compared to my current setup?

Hehe, it depends on the games that you are playing/intend to play. When it comes to AAA titles (and the many bad porting jobs), the difference should be definitely tangible, though if those are not your priority and you mainly stick to less demanding genres, then perhaps going for the insta-upgrade isn't such an obvious choice after all.
Then again, I'm almost a hardware illiterate (without money, my interest in new stuff instantly vanishes xD), so it's probably better if you listen to to more competent Humpers when it comes for better advices and fully future-proof purchases^^

Soo, I'm becoming increasingly tempted by:
An Intel Core i7 4790
and Gigabyte Z97P-D3
Both for exactly £299.
Thoughts?

old yes, outdated nope. over clock that 2500k to 4,4ghz and it will last another 3 years without a doubt. cause even skylake isnt really faster at same clockspeed, and its much more expensive. only problem with buying used cpus -> you dont know what the other guy did with the cpu before

I said old, it's a 4 year old CPU.
I'd definitely not buy a used 4yo CPU, seems like a huge gamble.
