|
 |
Quote: | Word of the new service came to light earlier today, when Bloomberg reported on an email sent to video creators that said, "By creating a new paid offering, we'll generate a new source of revenue that will supplement your fast growing advertising service." Google later confirmed that the report was legitimate, and that revenues would be shared.
"While we can't comment on ongoing discussions, giving fans more choice to enjoy the content they love and creators more opportunity to earn revenue are always amongst our top priorities," it said in a statement.
The subscription fee hasn't been set and there's no word on when the new service option will be rolled out. The notification of the coming change was sent out to content creators in order to give them sufficient time to review and agree to changes in their terms of agreement. It's a bit concerning that YouTube hasn't shed light on how much YouTube channels (like ours) will expect to earn through this program, but any formal systems that discourage the use of AdBlock, which inhibits sites like ours from existing, are welcome. |

So.... Is this for idiots who didn't figure out how to use AdBlock ir is YT going to introduce unskippable ads?

well this is the message i have got ... plus yes , they are disabling ads that you can skip in some months
Code: |
Dear YouTube Partner,
Your fans want choices. Not only do they want to watch what they want, whenever they want, anywhere, and on any device they choose, they want YouTube features built specifically with their needs in mind. Over the past several months, we’ve taken bold new steps to bring these experiences to life. Since inviting hundreds of thousands of fans into our YouTube Music Key Beta, we've seen tremendous engagement. And we've seen an equally enthusiastic response for our new YouTube Kids app, designed to give families a simpler and safer video-viewing experience— it’s already crossed 2 million installations in less than one month.
We’re excited to build on this momentum by taking another big step in favor of choice: offering fans an ads-free version of YouTube for a monthly fee. By creating a new paid offering, we’ll generate a new source of revenue that will supplement your fast growing advertising revenue.
So what’s next?
Launching a new paid offering will require us to update your terms through your Creator Studio Dashboard—a process that should feel familiar to anyone who went through a similar process three years ago when we began distributing and monetizing your content on mobile devices. Today, mobile represents over half of all watchtime and mobile revenue is up 200% in the last year. Just as with mobile, we’re confident this latest contract update will excite your fans and generate a previously untapped, additional source of revenue for you. Please look out for our notification, review it and let us know your thoughts.
It’s an exciting year for YouTube, as we push ourselves into uncharted territories. But we continue to be guided by a desire to deliver the choices fans want and the revenue you need. By working closely with you, we know it’ll be a successful journey.
The YouTube Team |

I'd consider paying youtube for high bitrate videos. There are hardly any high quality downloads of videos in the net anywhere. People just put it in youtube, and youtube compresses them to kingdome come.

There's a way for them. Obviously rooted phone needed.

I don't think xposed is even needed for it, i think adaway already does the job?

Does this mean less revenue for youtubers? That would suck, I don't want Google to make money to disable the ads ...

Some youtubers already do this with things like patreon. If you support them - you get to see videos early. Many of them got scared when ID match got released and started looking for alternative monetisation options.

Sometimes it's really hard to tell whether you're reading the onion or real news. The fact that there's a potential audience that doesn't know how to block ads by themselves and are eager to watch Pewdiepie's new show for 10 dollars a month, makes me want to build a spaceship and leave earth for good. I bet many of those people also wear Apple watches.

I think one of the most stunning things, is how they're wording it:
Quote: | We’re excited to build on this momentum by taking another big step in favor of choice: offering fans an ads-free version of YouTube for a monthly fee. |
*slams face on desk*
I can so imagine Hitler going to Auschwitz and yelling
"We're excited to build on this momentum by taking another big step in favor of choice: offering our Jewish friends a "no-hard labour" version of the concentration camp in exchange for a nice (gas) shower!!"

just you wait, give it a couple weeks/months
first its just some harmless extra comfort functions and exclusive shows to get a consumer base and spread the word around
then youtube is suddenly going to start full on assault on adblock scripts
next comes a delay ("exclusive early access") or paywalling of all new, future site features
and finally the psychological part:
comments, social stuff gets limited, or pay users get VIP treatment - so non-paying users feel excluded

Remember we're talking about Youtube here, limiting comments would actually be a killer feature.
