Why a prequel and not a sequel with a new baddie a new school, new professors, same universe...

What would be the difference if it was a sequel? It would still be as unrelated as possible to the main characters.

The amount of restrictions present regarding where to take the story and the uncertainty is completely removed as we know where everything is headed in general.
1 and 2 are still amazing. |

I fully agree this is a disadvantage when it comes to prequel films of a film series for example.
However, this is on a side medium compared to the original mediums of this IP. It's a TV show, while the originals can be considered the books and the films.
So even if it was taking place after the books/films it would be unlikely, in my opinion, to be driving forward the canon of the universe in any meaningful way. It would require very heavy consultation of Rowling in order to get her take on how the universe changed.
Therefore, I don't think a sequel wouldn't come with many of the same restrictions.

Yeah and current JK Rowling would declare everyone in the Harry Potter universe as bisexual rather than be concerned with the state of affairs post Voldemort's death

They most probably would be able to meaningfully push the canon forward but that would only be possible with a competent team of writers headed by a showrunner who has a clear vision.

If it's in Harry potter universe, it follows cannon. You can't avoid it. Post movies would work best as it'll be a fresh restart and a new story and a new baddie to stop.
Prequels hold no significance, so to fans why would they watch it? They either have to include characters from the movies/books/prequels depending how far they go in the prequel. If the beasts movies didn't exist, those would be great as a prequel series. Include younger versions of important characters. Keep fans happy. Excluding all of that won't bring in anyone knowing that it'll lead nowhere. Cause significant events happen in movies/books. So you'll just be watching Degrassi Hogwarts.
Post movies/books works because it'll be fresh new characters and a fresh start building upon what's already there. Don't need Jk for it. Just need competence. You'll need Jk for prequels cause they have to fit to the books/movies.
