|
 |
A friend is looking for a GPS for his car when he's travelling in europe (germany) and in south america (where i will follow him next year, so this is of interest to me as well)
Any advice what to get? I'm totally clueless when it comes to GPS.. My friend (who i bet is also quite clueless) says it's better to buy e.g a Garmin car GPS than to just use a mobile GPS in case there's no connection (i guess car GPS's connects to sateliltes so there's always a connection?)
Are there any fairly cheap ones where you can uploaded maps to both europe and to south america, or do you have to alter between the two? Usually you see "comes with free updates" whatever that means, does it mean you're free to update to whatever map you want or does it mean it will update the map with new roads etc..?
Thanks

im using here maps on android and with a big enough phone its quite good. just download the needed maps before hand and enjoy. It's free, so designated gps devices will most likely be better. Had lots of software troubles with my tomtom though, which were sometimes caused by living in estonia.

here maps can use offline material. dl prior and you are good. mobile connection isnt necessary. establishing sat connection can take longer without one though (a-gps -> assisted gps, gets the satellite position for you location online).
only difference between a navigation app on smarty and a dedicated navi system is the gps antenna, might get a better signal with a dedicated one (especially if it got a cabled antenna to put on the window). but i think that only matters if you do not have clear sight (i.e. very fucking bad weather or in tunnels etc)

hmm so you can get a satellite connection, even if there isnt a mobile connection? I dont understand how offline is of use if it can't track you.

As i said in the first post, i'm clueless about GPS, i have no idea what a GPRS is.
So ok, a mobile phone with a GPS app is just as good as a dedicated GPS then?

gprs (general packet radio system) is a mobile standard to transfer data (i.e. your mobile internet connection before umts and lte). gps (global positioning system) is used to determine you location and therefore for calculating a route from point a to point b

You can get a TomTom and Garmin gps really cheap, so might as well get that.
I hate you.

OK thanks, I guess he just have to try for himself what works best, he already have a quite recent android phone with a fairly large screen, so if there are free gps apps he can try both.

google maps works well even if you have no connection you can still see your position in the map, without itinerary in this case.

Using phone is never good idea if you're travelling to other countries than your own, since data traffic usually costs a buttload outside the country you got your phone carrier.
I hate you.

If you google a bit you can even find free apps with Openstreetmaps. I cannot recommend one since I dont use one. I've got the TomTom App a few years ago and it works pretty much exactly like their devices.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
