|
 |
I have an old computer from 2008
C2D E8200
Asus P5K
GTS 450 (512mb Vram)
3GB DDR2
Coolermaster 520W
Samsung 931 BF 19"
I was thinking about some small upgrade parts - Q9550, GTX 950, add more ram - 5GB
What do you think?
chill out man, life is beautifull...

How much will it cost you?
Only if you can do the upgrade for free or get it very cheap and add an SSD. Spending money on obsolete tech is a No-Go, imo. Then again, that Q9550 can be oced to 3,2 - 3,6 Ghz (with proper cooling) and its 4 cores could still have an impact in a few games. Lets not forget, many people buy AMD CPUs that dont perform alot better than the Q9550.
That said, I still have two C2D running in Notebooks and combined with an SSD they still perform good enough for simple tasks.
If you have the proper cooling already and get it for very very cheap or free then ok, why not. But I would not spend money on obsolete parts, especially DDR2 Ram.

I was planning to spend around 300 euros. (CPU, GPU, RAM)
Can find an used Q9550 for 80 euros (no plans for SSD)

Hmmm maybe it's time to take the plunge my friend
As in, upgrade to a new platform (CPU + mobo + DDR3) and for 300€ you can get a decent enough AMD system up and running.
I can tell you that with a Q8200@3.5GHz, 4GB DDR2 and a 6850 my system was struggling as hell last year, and my res was virtually the same as yours (1440x900).
With 300€ you'll be able to get an 8320 + a good mobo (or a decent overclocking one depending on your preference) and an 8GB DDR3 stick.
Do it and leave the GPU for later or buy a used one for now.

@ tonizito
I'm an Intel fan, but your suggestion looks interesting. (AMD is cheaper).
Btw, does new moterboards support old SATA I hard drives?

As long as they're SATA...
Although I would consider getting a new one to fully benefit from the mobo's support of SATA 3.x. Even a relatively small one, for the files you use most often.

There might also be a cheaper intel alternative, like an i5-4460 or something a bit lower than that.
IMOOOOO the money problem from going with intel is that their mobos are generally more expensive than the AMD "equivalent" for the same features and quality.
Werelds made a PC a few months back, the backbone was this i5 + B85M mobo + 8GB DDR3 and all that cost a clean 300€.
I'd go with that, hold on a few months and then grab a 950ti or something like that.
But really, I was on your boat a year back and I completely understand the temptation of just upgrading what you have but trust me, you'll be much better if you just do a real upgrade.

I support what tonizito says. Buying really old tech for 300€ for old tech is money wasted since you will be spending again in a few month.
Plus, with the new stuff also come all the other benefits, USB 3, PCIe 3.0, DDR3 Ram, SATA III etc. and better driver support.

SSD might be the biggest upgrade you can have to actually notice your upgrade with everything outside games.
Even if it's just a small 64GB for the OS itself, even if it's just first or second gen, it's still miles better than any HDD out there.

do not invest in the 775 socket. 9550 are still fucking expensive and are raped even by a small i3 in most cases. look out for a used i5 2500k and z-board for overclocking, should be around ~150 euros

For reference, here's what I built:
Obviously this is a complete system, total is about €560 - but this'll run pretty much anything at just fine, even at 1080p. It's not capable of doing that with 4xMSAA in all games, but it's still a huge jump from what you have now. Just the motherboard, RAM and CPU will set you back €290.
At any rate, things you don't want to do:
- Invest more than €10 into an S775 system; €80 for that 9550 is not worth it. You'll still get CPU bottlenecked at your resolution even with a 750 Ti
- 5 GB RAM; terrible number, stick to even numbers with matching sticks of memory.
And yes, an 8320 is a very viable budget solution for you as well.

Really Werelds, you wouldn't recommend a "normal" user an SSD? You don't agree that the boost they will get, even during normal usage is good enough to justify the price? :\

Hmmm, IMO SSD is a must for any new build or upgrade to justify the rest of the bump you get from the other hardware. HDD just holds back the true potential of everything combined these days.

If your budget is fixed shoot straight for the "core upgrade".
Forget the GPU, forget the SSD, if you're really up to upgrading right now from that old 775 then ignore the "extras" for the moment.
Especially since IMO both of those are on their way to get cheaper sooner than the MB and CPU will (RAMzzz seems to be getting cheaper, a trend that I hope lasts until the end of the year so I can grab another 8Gb stick )

Sure.
But he's still on a 775 system. While an SSD can do magical things for loading times and general use of the OS, it won't do jack shit for his game performance, which is what he's after. Fix that first, SSD can follow later.

Something like - i5 4440, 8GB DDR3, GTX 960
I think it will be enough for playing at 1280x1024 | It will pulverize 1280x1024
