Hi all,

My friend is upgrading and he said what is the best 16GB or 8GB DDR4, he plays games but doesn't do anything else like video editing etc.

Thanks!

Is there going to be a lot of difference via gaming?

What freiwald said.

Your friend will be just fine with 8GB but it's not a bad idea to get 16GB if he has the money for it.

16GB is recommended, and it's not that expensive
there are games that at max details 1080p eat up 6GB+ of RAM, and when Windows has eaten the other 2... you will see excessive paging

also with 16GB you can remove the page file alltogether

8GB is enough for gaming these days, and will be in the future. 16gb is only usefull if program for videoencoding are used or huge raw images are beeing processed on that machine or vms are used. otherwise its a waste of money to get more than 8gb

and dont deactivate the pagefile,NEVER!

Batman Arkham Knight, which was released a month ago, uses 6GB+ of RAM memory when playing at 1080p

that means 8GB is barely enough for gaming these days Rolling Eyes

not to mention GTA5, Fallout4...

batman doesnt count cause its still a mess! gta5 used much ram if its available yes because of a memory leak, but it doesnt make a performance difference between 8 and 16 gb. after they patched it usage was always about ~3gb even if more was available. so 16gig is useless in that case, and fallout4? srsly? its not even released and you dont know shit about its performance/requirements

I'm not sure, I gave it as an example of what I encountered while playing at 1080p.

Using Arkham Knight as an example... are you serious? Laughing
At least elaborate on those GTAV and Fallout 4(???) claims, but AK, come on...

RAM usage does not scale with the resolution

More is always better.

I have 16 gb Ram. I never use them, but I have them. And I feel a lot better then I would, had I only taken 8 gb Ram at the time.

So tell your friend to take 16 gb Ram. It just feels better. Really, I'm not kidding. Smile

And never forget... there will be games in the future we dont know about that will use ressources we dont have and use more Ram. And when that time comes, your friend will be able to "lean back" with satisfaction.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

16GB recommended. 8GB is bare minimum for gaming/advanced user PC.

Spending the 80€ on a better GPU is much better investment than wasting money on 16GB of RAM for gaming.

that's a memory leak in batman. gta 5 uses 2-3gb ram, so again a memory leak that happens on some rigs.

Fallout 4 I doubt will use a lot.

but yeah, if I was building now i'd get 16, as 8 won't be enough for people with bloated OS installations once games start going over 4gb more frequently.

No-one here multitasks?

I'm usually running a game, browser with a netflix and another browser with few dozen pages open automatically refreshing...

The browsers alone take a few gigabytes of ram.

yeah, if you keep bloat browsers open while gaming, then 8 gb is not enough.

For a gaming oriented rig with a non bloated OS setup it's still enough.

my win7 64 install uses up 750ish MB of ram by itself, so the 7GB ram left is plenty for gaming purposes.

So far the most demanding game ram wise for me has been AC unity, using up 4.1GB ram.

Thanks all, after the mixed comments he decided to go with 16gb of ram. He's been trying to overclock the cpu but everything he does it doesn't want to overclock, he has a gigabyte x99 sli and every time he trys to get into the bios he gets a black screen, he found out after searching Google that his Samsung 120gb pro isn't capatiable with the motherboard so once he unplugs it he can get into the bios fine. He has a 5820k, what's the best vcore and ghz should he choose? I know it's different on some systems. Thanks

i think they really fixed/overworked the page file in windows 10.

I have 16gb or ram and the pagefile is "recommended 2936 MB" and "currently allocated 2944 MB"

which is quite different from the huge amounts it used to allocate before in earlier windows.
