I'm sure all our retroheads around here know the story of the Sony/Nintendo collaboration, right? Nintendo started working with Sony to release a CD-ROM attachment for the SNES, while Sony would develop their own console that retained SNES/SNES-CD support. Sony eventually developed their system called the "Play Station" which had SNES and SNES-CD compatibility but the deal to create the CD-ROM attachment for the SNES fell through, lots of bickering from Nintendo over licensing, so Nintendo went to Phillips instead.. and that fell through again. Meanwhile, Sony scrapped the SNES support on their own system and just worked on their standalone PlayStation, but that didn't stop several prototype Nintendo/Sony Play Station systems being built.

One of those has surfaced courtesy of the son of one of the original designers who still had a unit. Right now the son and the retro collector gods, over at Assembler Games, are working together to get this unit working \o/

Aye, read the story... One lucky bastard
Thought the only ones existing was in some Sony bunker

What I don't know... did they ever create finished prototypes or games for it? (snes-CD games that is)

Supposedly 200 working prototypes were created but I don't know about any software, I'm going to be eagerly devouring information from Assembler Games to find out what happens next Smile

Fully compatible with SNES games, unfortunately the unit has some issues with audio and the CD drive is seemingly deliberately disabled, although Restart - the retro store the original owner took it to - are going to do more research into it. With no SNES-CD titles ever created, and this not being the same hardware as what eventually became the PlayStation, even a working drive wouldn't really "do" anything.

Still damned cool.

Ah Nintendo ... the biggest dicks in gaming back then. They proceeded to fuck over Philips as well and the result was Nintendo throwing Philips a tiny bone as compensations which became the crappy CD-I Zelda games.

While this console is cool in a historical way, it's still basically just a SNES with a CD-ROM module and without any support for it ... . It's not even sure if the hardware was boosted for the CD-ROM element - I think it was mainly planned for games with larger capacity and cheaper to produce. If you imagine it took Nintendo a decade longer to finally step over to CD - and only even mini-CDs with smaller data limits - you really can see how even back then Nintendo was running behind technologically.
