does anyone really have a soft spot for N64 graphics? personally i can't stand it, even though i have many fond memories of Golden Eye and the N64.

The graphics were good - for the time. Didn't age well though. It's the music, gameplay and death animations that are still great. The latter are not completely recreated it seems. And an option to switch to AI enhanced textures would be nice.

Yeah, I don't get it with any "retro" games. Just give me the old game with current graphics. I would love to play the original VtMB as it was, just with current gen graphics. The lighting alone could add so much to the already great atmosphere. Same with a lot of the oldies, KotOR1-2, Freelancer, the 2 original Fallouts, Planescape, Morrowind, the Jedi Knight games, Anachronox, etc.

But I definitely don't want new games with those graphics. And it isn't that I care for graphics, I just don't see the point when you can do better.

It's cheaper and easier to make. A lof of these games are made by a single person or two. Cultic for example, one guy doing it. Anything more would actually cost these small time publishers

It's not cheaper to make and it's not faster to make, no way. Is it faster for me to make a low poly tree than a high poly in blender? hell no. for a low poly model i need to think more, plan it better.

Are low resolution textures easier to make, faster? No. you could argue that if these people are very, very familar with making low poly graphics and low-res textures then its maybe slightly faster because they are used to it, otherwise no.

There are many 1-person games with modern graphics and which looks rather nice too.

Until i worked on Kenshi it was a 1-person game entirely and at the time (some 12-13 years ago) it actually looked rather impressive graphically. I follow quite few games on Steam which has modern graphics, i'm sometimes surprised too see it's a 1-person project, like full-on No Man's Sky style games with good graphics, or Stalker-like RPG's.

Nah, i think a game like this could absolutely look really great instead of like N64 poop. It would appeal to more too, not just people who are ok with N64 graphics (you will not find too many).

i was actually thinking in my head more about Build engine style games that are currently in production. There's so many. But even the 3d ones, while im sure plenty go for the quake aestethic on purpose, its also due to constraints. The advancement in tech is the singular reason games cost and take as many years as they do today. Same barrier the id team hit going from wolf to doom to quake and beyond. For sure 3 guys could make better looking games, but its also gonna take longer and cost more and be buggier. More variables involved. I also profoundly dislike the ps1 and n64 aestethic. I have no history with them and i find their particular rendering style appaling and nauseatingly hideous. I would prefer any other visual style in existence over these two

even as a kid when the n64 came out i thought it looked like ass and thought it was a fad.. compare it to a sprite based game like SoTN and it was no contest. i was such a little sprite master race prick Laughing

Haha, i thought Mario 64 was just amazing. Loved it, it was just something quite new at the time.. i obviously also remember golden eye, i thought the animations were so incredible in that game Very Happy Awesome in 2-player spit screen too.
Mario 64 i mostly remember for its incredibly tight controls, but also the level design.

Waverace 64 i play to this day.

My favorite console for sure.

Yuck!

I guess it comes down to the graphics of your childhood. For me, Doom and Build engine will always have a warm place in my heart, but this crap I really can’t stand, when even at the time, we had much better graphics already on PC with 3dfx.

Same, the above doesn't really interest me. Although the thing I do like about goldeneye is the interactivity of each mission (aside from how closely they matched the movie given the technology of the time).

plant remote charges
add Spycam to computer
detonate dam wall
photograph the thing etc
stealth wait for doors to open and infiltrate

The objectives are part of the gameplay rather than cutscenes, which adds immersion. Also prefer doom and build engine games, Hedon Bloodright I think is one of the better ones because it has puzzling and mission objectives as opposed to just run and gun to the end.

No we didn't, both 3DFX chipset and Mario 64 was released in '96, i had them pretty much at the same time, perhaps N64 a little earlier. I had the Rendition Verité, also '96 but it was available earlier that year than 3DFX so that's what i bought. On PC we had Tomb Raider 1, Quake, but it didn't really look a lot better than Mario 64, better resolution perhaps.

Edit: yeah, looked it up, 3DFX was released late in '96 (november), and i got the N64 eariler that year (imported from US) + the 3D accelerator card (rendition verité, can't remember exact model name). "VQuake was originally released as Beta 10 on December 2, 1996" so that's when we were able to have actual 3D without the pixlation.

Also the sound design makes it seem like you're using a stapler, not a shotgun. Gameplay looks super meh too.
