I'm looking for something small, really small, with a decent GPU (1080p gaming)

There are plenty of premade systems I can buy, generally they have GTX960/8GBRAM/mid range CPUs and they seem to be decent enough, but they're obviously more expensive than they need to be.

Anyone care to suggest anything? Emphasis on the 'small' again, it needs to fit within a 6-7 inch space, but could also be tipped on it's side.

The GTX 970 mini came out, so you're out in the market in the right time, but that may be overkill for just 1080p gaming. Up to you, really.

I'd say try to find a second-hand GTX 670 mini though, unless they still sell them at a discount price in 'Straya kunt. Then look at the http://www.silverstonetek.com/raven/products/index.php?model=RVZ01 and consider your options.

the 750ti can also play on 1080p, but is of course not suitable for 60fps@high settings... If that is important for you, than the system will be neither cheap nor small :/

imho a 750ti (max 960) + i3 would be sufficient to play most games right now.

u want a small thing, so k cpu and z board is kinda useless cause oc isnt really possible on small space. you just stick to a non k cpu and a cheap h97 b85m board or something similar which offers all ports u need. and think about a xeon 1231v3 instead of a i5. they can be undervolted easily and are cool and powerfull

How about a small form factor 970, like Zotac's instead of a mini 970? Might be some trouble with a more enclosed case though

Damn, those 970 mini's aint cheap. I'm trying to keep it under 1k, and they're $500 alone (with shipping).

750ti benchmarks are a little weak

Perhaps I do have to sacrifice size for what I can afford at this price Sad And if size goes, I may as well beef it up a bit:

ASUS GeForce GTX 960 Strix DirectCU II OC 4GB $369 (perhaps even a 970, they're not much more)
Intel Core i5 4690K $319
Corsair Vengeance CML8GX3M2A1600C9 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 $99
ASRock Z97M Pro4 Motherboard $135
Aerocool Dead Silence Cube $129

Total: $1051

I already have a spare 256GB SSD + a few HDDs

How's that sound?

FWIW this is still $300 cheaper than a prebuilt one with GTX960 2GB VRAM, 8GB RAM and some weak, weak CPU

Should go for 16 GB ram already.

As the CPU is already strong enough, it should be possible to host a server and play the game at the same time, but with 8gb ram, you would be hitting the ram limit.
(You can just get some cheaper valueram as it makes no difference as long as it's not broken pos )

I don't see the lulz. This is actually what I did the first time (I even got a used GPU). CPU's are so powerfull and there is so little progress now that a top K CPU with OC will let you be on the top-end for like 5 years. In the meantime you can upgrade your GPU very easily.

you don't seem to understand it, there is a thing called bottleneck and overkill and there needs to be a balance. usually good balance for gaming PC is CPU half the price of GPU. in this case CPU is overkill and GPU is bottleneck. if he picked cheaper CPU and more expensive GTX970, performance in games would increase tremendously.

16gb ?
stay with 8.

i5 is a must. 4 real cores is a must these days.
And gpu have to be 3gb+. 2gb gpus are really strained by recent games.

Small case is a good idea

Want to save an enormous chunk of money? Two words: Pentium Anniversary.

http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/pentium-20th-anniversary-series-g3258-processor-review,1.html

$100-230+ cheaper (put that towards a mini 970, perhaps?) and a STUPIDLY powerful proc. Haswell dual-core and enormously overclockable up to 4.5Ghz on air. There are some games, indeed, where a dual might be less than ideal due to the multithreading push, but right now? It seems even a dual is still perfectly viable for the vast majority of gaming -- and that G3258 is shockingly good value, especially compared to the i3-4130 which is itself still just a dualie too, albeit with multithreading.

nope the anniversary sucks, is easy to oc but every i3 fucks it hard. the ht improves performance hard in games which support it well. so in gta for example the difference between a i3 and i5 with same clock speed is not worth mentioning

It's just Aussie prices, their dollar is considerably weaker than the € and they may have even more taxes tacked onto hardware than your country.

http://www.xe.com/currencyconverter/convert/?Amount=367&From=EUR&To=AUD for example.

Speaking of Aussie pricing, it may be worth importing the hardware. My Aussie friend tells me you can import anything worth less than 1000 AUD with no customs duties.

No worries about bottlenecks if someone plans to upgrade the GPU *ONLY* after a year or so.

That's what I would do, esp with DX12 looming ahead. Powerful CPU + cheap card and later buy a newer but more modern cheap card.

think 16gb is overkill, 8 are more than enough for gaming and videos

board can be reduced to a b85 chipset (if the cpu is supported by the board) to safe money

psu is kinda oversized for that and if you want a strong gfx card it has to be the 970

prices seem high but converted to euros its almost the same as what i would have to pay here
