Well given Brian Fargo's recent comments about he and Chris Avellone working together on Van Buren in the future, perhaps he's going to work at InXile?

Would be nice, but I'd be surprised if he left Obsidian for inXile. I just hope whatever he does he is sticking to writing for games, he's one of the few good writers in the industry.

Edit: People on Codex keep posting this, apparently it was posted a while back:

Avellone didn't just work at Obsidian though, he was a co-founder and part owner. I wonder if he retained his stake, or Feargus bought him out?

Edit: Judging by his LinkedIn, he does indeed seem to have given up his share:

Creative Director/Chief Creative Officer/Co-Owner
Obsidian Entertainment, Inc.
June 2003 – May 2015 (12 years)

Guess one party wants to create easy f2p games or something with dumbass stories. Must be drastic to make him leave like that. But i hope we'll get to know what the problem is/was.

Considering Obsidian are now working on a free-to-play MMO with a Russian publisher, perhaps he saw the company heading in a direction he wasn't happy with?

I think it is reference to a secret project he was pitching as lead designer that got rejected by publishers. I don't think it was an internal decision to not pursue it, they just couldn't get funding. It's been the same story multiple times at Obsidian, that's why they went to Kickstarter. Maybe this time was the final straw for him.

Guess you wanted to try it like some of us do with others... but unfortunately you've done it with the wrong person KC

Might be because he never worked on stellar games like Gears of Wars Cool Face

He's talking about Depression Quest.

So many people at the top level have left since last year - Casey Hudson from Bioware, Amy Hennig from Naughty Dog, Kojima from Konami etc etc ... it's a shame that companies can't retain their top level talent. Sad

Obsidian laid off a lot of their best staff in 2012, George Ziets was a particular noteworthy casualty around the time.

Imagine if these people would put their creative power into one game. Could be a masterpiece or a complete disaster. Smile

My money is on this being tied with him not getting the lead writer spot on Pillars of Eternity. A shame really, seeing how the story was mishandled by Fenstermaker.

Hmmm how to explain, how to explain... oh I got it!
Something like when herp derpinski - the genius mind behind Hurrs of Durrs series - left epic games, only this one is actually much more relevant.

Seems to be the curse of BI guys that they can't stay together in the same team for more than a few years. Pretty much the only way you'd get them together these days is if inXile and Obsidian merged.

And so it ends the Obsidian era as we knew it. *sad trombone* Maybe it's for the best, I just hope Chris sticks to gifting us with his talent, it would be a shame if he tried to do something else (very egoistical thought Razz).

I think Inxile would be the most reasonable choice at the moment. Honestly I don't see him working at Bethesda or even worse Biowarea, unless they gave him carte blanche for a Kotor 3 with a transgender rebooted Darth Nihilus

I think InXile is a safe bet. He's worked on Wasteland 2 and Torment, and just yesterday PC Gamer had an article where Brian Fargo mentioned Avellone wants to work on Van Buren. Plus both studios are close to each other which means he wouldn't need to pack up and move.

Well Obsidian has been around almost twice as long as Black Isle officially was, 12 vs 7 years, although of course most of the Black Isle members were around for several years prior to that as part of the RPG group of Interplay.

Not that it would ever happen, but if it did Tim Cain likely wouldn't be part of it. Seems like he still holds a grudge against Fargo going back to when he quit Interplay to form Troika.
