|
 |
Does anyone know what's the better car navs for android right now?
I have this old Tom Tom gps unit, but I don't trust the damn thing. The GPS on my phone is probably way better anyway, still need a proper app though. I'd prefer knowing about free ones, and if they work offline that's a nice bonus for when there's no data available.
Which one(s) do you guys use, if any?

Hmmm, I would have thought the android phones come pre-installed with google maps. I use google maps on my iphone and it works very nicely.
There was another one that was pretty good, I believe it was called MotionX GPS, might be worth checking out.

What makes it that much better than Maps? Not looking to start an argument It's just that I really like Maps and it works pretty damn well for me, but I haven't really tried a different navigation app for Android, so who knows. |
Offline maps.
For someone like me who lives close to other countries and frequently cross those borders, that is vital. Maps is completely useless to me because it requires an internet connection (and no, caching up front is not good enough). Roaming costs are not fun

That +maps isn't that accurate. Noticed it again when we went to Malmö when my family visited.

Tried several nav apps, but i always come back to Navigon.
I would like it if Google Maps worked though. Sadly during two car drives i tried to using it, it never got a signal, even after nearly 2 minutes. Started Navigon and navigation started after not even 5 secs
Also tried that Here app, but didn't really convince me. And now it will get fucked by Facebook too

I like waze, but never used outside of brazil, so I wouldn't know how good it is abroad. And it requires data, but it's very dynamic, users report visible cops, accidents, traffic, etc and it tells you right away about whatever is on your path.

Same goes for Waze as for Maps, it's dead to me since it _requires_ data to work

This sounds really great, thanks! Finally my Sammy S4 life-in-plastic-is-fantastic will be used for something other than calling and whatsapping
Offline maps are a lifesaver for me really, since I don't have an internet data plan (and even if I had one, it wouldn't work properly xD)

You never know, LTE in the UK is about 10000000000 times more reliable and faster than 99% of all land connections

Interesting, I'm going to check out the HERE app for my long drive this summer. The maps don't appear very detailed, but maybe there are more hidden calculations going on there. I agree that it works offline is key.
What I'm wondering is, does the app auto-update the maps or do you at least get a notification when the map(s) I've downloaded can be updated?
How can this all be free?

Copilot works extremely well, and you can use it offline.

Did you buy Copilot? It seems to have many features behind a pay-wall.

It does have POI (petrol stations and what not), just not a complete company directory like Maps does. At least around here it does, YMMV obviously
And yes it lets you know when there's new maps, although not with an OS-wide notification. At least mine doesn't, but my app version is 6 months old now, need to update it

Nope, I got the phone from my sister, and she installed it, guess she found it cracked somewhere.
