|
 |
So I have an old iPad 2, which is still on iOS 4.x. It's jailbroken and running XBMC fine. More recently I've had issues with it not playing some files, not seeking / scanning properly, and crashing a fair bit. Finally at my wits end and want to do something about it.
I know that the latest iOS isn't JB, so I find myself in a situation where I guess I need to wait for 4.3, and then hope for an untethered jailbeak.
In the mean time, I'm thinking about upgrading to the latest non-JB iOS, and living without XBMC (it's the only thing I do on the iPad, I don't need JB for anything other than XBMC).
I've done some hunting and have found a few different apps which appear to play MKVs - HD Player / VLC for example. But as you all know, most of the releases contain AC3 audio, and I'm yet to find an app that supports the audio part.
Is there anything out there? Or am I SOL until a new JB comes out?
(Don't want to transcode everything I watch before dumping it onto the iPad)

Infuse should give you what you need.

Thanks. Looks like I need to pay £7.99 for the pro version in order to listen to Dolby Audio... is it worth it? Is there anything else that's free? (I'm assuming not)

Well, you could go a different way, and use Plex. Plex streams it from your PC to the app, but the app on the device also costs money. I am very happy with Infuse. It plays everything but Remuxes on my iOS devices.

Sweet, I think I might bite. Well, I might try and wait for 4.3/JB/Kodi but if I get too pissed off I'll just jump in I think.
Just having a play with the app, it seems pretty cool. Love the variety of options for uploading media - SMB support is cool - no more needing to plug the device into my media center!

SIDE NOTE: Anyone know how iOS 8.x runs on iPad2? Am I being silly upgrading from 4.x?

On an iPad 2, I would not recommend iOS7 or 8 if you have the option.

Like Leo said, I wouldn't recommend it either. As an iPad2 owner, going from iOS 6 to iOS 7 was a thoroughly bad idea, the whole system is that much slower, less responsive and more prone to game crashing now as it runs out of memory far too often. The only reason I even upgraded was because of the constant push for "must have iOS 7 for Game X to work"

Hmm interesting. Not sure where that leaves me then as I suspect Infuse won't be supported on iOS4.x!

Wait, just a thought. given my current device is JB, can I take the blobs or whatever they're called and apply them to an iOS 8.1.3 installation, and get away with installing a jailbroken iOS 8.1.3 or something?

What else do you do on your pad? If it's just Safari and video, you'll be fine with 8.3.

(or iOS 6 for that matter, if it runs that much better)

Blobs have been useless since iPhone 4S/iPad 2. There are no known bootrom exploits to use the blobs.

Not even Safari. Just videos. It's used on my train commute daily, for videos exclusively. SOMETIMES safari, but very rarely.
8.3 means I have to pay £7.99 though, and do it "officially" via that app, where-as 8.1.3 + Kodi = free (if it's possible that is)

Ah ok, well this is an iPad2 but I'm guessing the latter part of your comment means it's futile!

8.1.3 is not possible at this point. Only 8.2 (for a little while longer) and 8.3. Since 8.4 betas are already coming, not sure if they'll burn their exploit cards on 8.3.
