AMD loss bigger than expected as PC sales remain weak

Quote:
(Reuters) - U.S. chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc reported a bigger-than-expected adjusted loss for the first quarter and said it was exiting its dense server system business, effective immediately.

Quote:
The company, which said in October it would cut 7 percent of its workforce, has been shifting its focus to gaming consoles and low-power servers to combat falling laptop sales.

But progress has lagged Wall Street's expectations due to continued weak PC and graphic card sales as well as intense competition from Intel Corp.

Quote:
AMD's net loss widened to $180 million, or 23 cents per share, in the quarter ended March 28 from $20 million, or 3 cents per share, a year earlier.

Revenue fell 26.2 percent to $1.03 billion, missing analysts estimates of $1.05 billion.

While amusing one has to remember. If AMD folds Intel/Nvidia will be left on their own. Once that happens we all will be losers.

2015 continues to be a terrible year for AMD.

AMD announces quarterly loss of $197 million, its fourth straight loss

The Sunnyvale-based company has lost about $8 billion in 17 years.

Quote:
What Atiq Raza, the company’s former president, CTO, and COO, told Ars more than two years ago seems to still hold true.

"There's no control on spending—even now, one of the problems is if you take a look at the salary structure," he said, "[AMD is] a sinking ship, fundamentally."

Can Zen and Arctic Islands even save them at this point? I seriously doubt they'll be able to match Intel/Nvidia's performance, let alone surpass it.

Whatever happens AMD isn't going to disappear, they'll simply be sold off. There's already rumors of MS and Samsung wanting to buy them, and with the money both of them have wouldn't be such a bad idea for R&D. Personally I hope Samsung would pick them up.

It's actually true, but the part that Shoshomiga missed out was how the contract works both way and if any part of it is terminated then *both* ends lose out.

http://www.kitguru.net/components/cpu/anton-shilov/amd-clarifies-cross-license-with-intel-change-of-control-terminates-agreement-for-both/

Is AMD is bought out, the new owner will no longer be licensed to created processors that use Intel's x86 instruction set and at the same time Intel will no longer be allowed to create processors that use the x86-64 instruction set from AMD.

So whoever buys AMD (supposedly) will broker a new patent deal as well.

Their competition to Nvidia is vital IMO. Their CPUs suck ass. No, seriously, they are so far behind in performance and power consumption.

I'm gonna stop buying PCs if AMD dies, NVidia GPUs are just too shit in the long run to be worth their stupid pricetags.

Fingers crossed....

Nvidia's GPUs themselves are fine, and pricing was pretty competitive as well. Their practice of locking everything down with their proprietary G-StuffX is more of an issue.

They have a large market share now and by pushing all that stuff on more games they can lock it down. Crap like Gameworks can be bad enough when dealing with lazy ports, but with things like G-Sync, and now that upcoming NV Link, you are forced to commit with a whole set of hardware.

Should AMD completely lose their grip on this, it will be even harder for someone else to step in and provide competition and this doesn't work out very well for us in the long term.

Somewhat misleading quotation there. Nantong Fujitsu isn't buying 85% of AMD for $371 million, it's a shared venture in a special market where NFM will get 85% control over that particular venture (I don't even know what it is.. "ATMP facilities").

Quote:
$436 million agreement combines AMD's high-volume ATMP facilities with Nantong Fujitsu Microelectronics' OSAT expertise to service broad range of customers

An attempt to create net revenue with those ATMP facilities that AMD owns in China, Malaysia etc.

I just hope the 380X will sell well. As there are no other card in the target price category of ~250€.
I don't really like AMD or Nvidia that much today. But without competition it will be worth than now.
