Wentworth Prison,an edgy, sexy and graphic TV sgow which premiered on Australian television earlier this year, is the long-anticipated reimagining of classic Australian television series Prisoner, a program that ran for seven years and 692 episodes between 1979 and 1986. The series followed the lives of a group of women imprisoned in the fictional Wentworth Detention Centre.
The story revolves around Bea Smith, (Danielle Cormack) who is on remand for the attempted murder of her husband, as she arrives in jail for the first time. The drama charts her struggle to survive in the violent, pressure cooker environment of a contemporary women's prison. It's the story about how a housewife and mother from the suburbs became "Top Dog".
Quote:
Wentworth is much grittier, darker, more brutal and realistic than Netflix’s Orange is the New Black could ever hope to be. This bleak realism also makes Wentworth‘s well-developed characters and situations much more compelling than its fluffier American counterpart. It takes a no-holds-barred approach to subjects like officer sexual exploitation of prisoners, turf wars and hierarchy, sexuality, the inmate code of silence, gang beatings, gang rapes, prison riots, and the brutality of the crimes that landed these women behind bars
If you liked the British TV Series "Bad Girls" and HBO's "OZ" you probably should give this new TV series a try. I specifically didn't mention "Orange Is The New Black" which I liked, because although it deals with the same subject, Wentworth and OITNB are quite different in approach.
hehe just don't hold your breath it's not HBO in that regard but it is still close to OZ/Bad Girls
PS Although.. I do remember seeing Bea standing fully naked, other women's breasts, but no full frontal scenes. so I guess I'll remove "partial" from "partial nudity" then. Nudity it is!
PPS I added some screenshots for you horny lot lol
Yeah. Though not exactly a remake. In the first episodes of "Prisoner" Bea Smith is already a top dog. In Wentworth we actually witness what pushed her this way. And if you compare what happened in the Wentworth first season with what happened during the first bunch of Prisoner episodes you'll find some similar subplots but they are kinda changed.
So, it's rather a reimagining as they put it, than a remake.
Interesting! This looks way more gruesome than any women's prison show out there. The original Prisoner had a very campy feel to it, then again it was the 70's era. I never got around to watch it, don't have the nerve to either. Did you get it already? What's your verdict?
Just watched the first episode, I liked it..a lot! Many interesting characters, good acting and plenty of powerful moments already. Will keep watching for sure. Well done h0rnyfavn, well done.
I have one big complaint though.
Not enough boobies! That was clearly false advertising
Spoiler:
j/k , it's perfect as it is.
Spoiler:
if they want to show more boobies later on, I won't say no though
Done with 6 episodes now and will finish up with remaining tonight. Awesome show! Very gritty and much edgier than Orange is the New Black. Just wish it was an hour long show and had more episodes. Also, I'm just making a few observations here, but Erica, the Guvernor on this show has a rather uncanny resemblance to Karen Betts from Bad Girls. Similarly, Vera's storyline seems to be almost the same as Di Baker's from Bad Girls.
Anyway, I managed to complete the show the other day and loved every bit of it. This is way ahead of Orange is the New Black & Bad Girls. Frankie's character is fucking brilliant and so is the actress portraying the role. Can't wait for season 2.
Vern - a Nazi leader and Beacher -the main protagonist, they became enemies in the prison.. And they started fucking with each other to the point where their loved ones, their children died/were murdered, as far as I remember.. It was brutal [
Hope they show why and how Erica got replaced. This show really needs more characters brought in, like Bad Girls did. Each time the prison van would stop, the curiosity was to know what kind of character would pop out of there. Wentworth seems to have a static bunch of prisoners, at least in the first season.
So how is this show? I'm currently rewatching Oz with my fiancee (she's watching it for the first time, me second) and I'm wondering if we should watch this after we're finished.
I liked the first season, but I dunno how I feel about the second one tbh..I'd say the first one is considerably better. And the way the first season finale played out they could have ended the series right there.
I would list Bad Girls & OZ among similar shows, not orange is the new black so that you have some idea what Wentworth is like.

With your fiancee...? She enjoys male ass raping and all that sad crap from Oz?
Why not watch Orange is TNB instead?
Today I didn't even need to use my AK. I gotta say it was a good day. (c) - Ice Cube
I've seen only the first season (couldn't find the time for the 2nd one ..*soon*), but I agree with H0rnyfavn, it's definitely worth watching. Don't expect anything mind-blowing of course, but the quality is there (in terms of acting, writing, etc.).

Uh, yes? She also enjoyed The Wire and other HBO TV shows.
OISTNB doesn't seem as gritty as Oz is, but that might be just my impression, I haven't watched a single episode.
