So for the past 4 years I've been using i5 750 overclocked to 3.2 GHZ. Frankly, it holds up pretty well. Still, it's growing old and I've been thinking about an upgrade. Would you recommend upgrading now or waiting for Skylake? If I'm looking for price/performance ratio, what cpu and mobo is most recommended now?

It does look pretty good. Should be around 50%-60% faster than my current CPU (according to those comparison sites). Will probably boost my GTX970 a little as well. However it means investing in a 1150 motherboard, pretty close to next gen cpus. I'm really on a fence here.

and with a 4690k you won't need an upgrade for another 2-3 years anyway.

Well, just checked the local prices and the cpu 4690k with a mobo (asus z97-a) will cost me 500$. That's before adding a cooler. Considering that in a year there is a potential for a substantially superior hardware (I'm guessing here, no idea if Skylake will really be significantly better than today's cpus but it should be a "tock" part of the cycle) for samey price, I'm understandably cautious.
It's also hard to judge how much of an improvement such upgrade will be. If I've got a 40 fps game now, will upgrading get me to 60? The answer is maybe. So it's not as clear cut as - you need more power now than upgrade.
Anyway, I realize there is no definitive answer here, just wanted to read other people's opinion on the cpu situation

CPU situation is a bit meh, I've got meself an i5-2500. With not much funds I was looking at some options. A cheap second hand i7-2600K but it's hard to find (can't blame em) and anything else that fits on my 1155 is just too much money for the gain you get (got a quite limited budget so).
So for me switching over to a 1150 costs too much, so I guess I'm stuck with the i5-2500 untill it doesn't do the job anymore and forces me to upgrade or just wait till I get a decent income again (which should come faster  ).

Without being forced into buying a whole new platform, as a meaningful upgrade path I've got the choice of an i7-2600k/2700k or the i7-3770k to go to from my i5-2500k. They're still £180+ -- wtf?
