you can try process explorer and go from there or just do clean windows reinstall, it takes like 15 mins.

Why the silly obsession with "omg omg omg my mem is not sitting idle so oh noez"? You have 32GB of ram, let the PC use it, otherwise why the fuck you get so much RAM? Have you actually run in an issue where an app needed memory but none was available? Modern operating systems sometimes use memory to provide faster operation, and will free the used memory when needed.

If you buy a nice big closet, do you also try to keep it as empty as possible?

So just because he has a lot of ram it's ok that 20GB is used when he's not doing anything?
"Mah CPU is always running at 50% even when I r knot does anythinks....is Kay cuz den I knows at least its teh workings!"
edit:
Also make sure it's not the VM's that are using that.

im with leo here. its normal that windows uses much ram if you have 32gb installed. caching operations etc. its dynamically managed, if a program needs ram it gets it. why u buying so much ram if you dont want windows to use it? think about it!

Yup, am I glad the Ram-optimization-marathons of the olden days are over.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

All that was due to terrible memory management of the operating systems. Since Vista (not 7 or 8/8.1), Microsoft has improved their memory management significantly. Remember in Windows XP when you were copying a large file from one HDD to another (or worse, from one partition to another on the same HDD), you'd leave your computer and when you come back, your system is not responding and windows are rendered element by element for a few minutes until all the swapped data finds it way to the memory. When was the last time this has happened, even on a 5400 RPM hdd?

If that memory wasnt being used, you would notice your PC acting much slower than you're used to. I believe that the more mem you have these days, the smoother your desktop experience will be due to dynamic caching and other such wicthcraft.
If in doubt, take out all but 2gb, and enjoy your streamlined experience

Then he'd be crying that a whole 1GB of his 2GB is in use and he can't see why.

2000 and XP were still using a very similar memory management to NT 3.51/4, which, while of course better than the 9x model, was still very lacking. The 3.51/4 is a product of its time, but it went on for too long. Vista was the most serious attention given to memory management in many many years from Microsoft.

Not true. If you were to install Vista on a computer with Windows 7, other than several cosmetic differences and branding, you would not notice that much difference for the most part. The problem most people had was drivers, and that took a while to solve - just in time for the amazingly improved Windows 7.

Process Explorer takes up too much memory and CPU.

According to all the apple geniuses here my RAM usage is broken.
Edit, it also seems you have several users on your workstation. Have you checked if they're all logged out completely?

Yeah, definitely make sure the other accounts/users are completely logged out and not that you just switched users.
